Edwina Akin Stewart 10/27/1920 1/28/2004 Edwina Akin Stewart died peacefully at home with two of her sons by her side. Born in Longview, Ella Edwina Akin was the youngest of seven children. She was three when her family moved to Austin where she graduated from Austin High, attended UT and met her first husband. Edwina had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She and her sister Grace and a friend Billie Davis sang on a local radio station in the forties during the war. Years later she would sing at the weddings of family members and as a member of the choir at the Central Christian Church. Her first marriage to Douglas Jaques ended with his death from injuries sustained in a tragic car accident leaving her a single mother with two young boys. Several years later in Houston, she met and married William W. Stewart, himself a widower with three small children. The combined family moved to Austin in 1955 when her new husband accepted a job at the University of Texas. She was a caring mother to her children and a devoted wife to her husband Bill who was so very protective of her. Their love for each other only grew stronger over the years. Bill preceded her in death by just 10 mos. Edwina, who lived for her family, loved her little grand kids, and was especially excited about the arrival of her first great grand daughter Ella, just seven months ago. Her biggest enjoyments over the last few years were her visits to her last remaining sibling, her Gracie, in Houston. The visits though short in duration were long on emotion and required the assembly of all the nieces, nephews, cousins, et al for a big dinner get together. If you wanted to see her face really light up just mention a trip to Houston to see her sister Grace. Edwina was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Hale, parents Robert Harry and Ollie Scruggs Akin, brothers Harry, Ray, and Horace Akin, and sisters Helen Welch and Edna Hardin. She is survived by her sister Grace Allen and her husband Bill, daughter Ruth Stewart, and sons, Jerry Jaques and his wife Vicki, John Stewart and Douglas Jaques, son in law Geoff Hale, grandsons David and John Hale, Jeff and Chris Jaques and granddaughters Ruth Hale, Julie Jaques, and Norah Erwin-Stewart and great granddaughter Ella Gibbins and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Margie Williams whom for 49 years we depended on for so many things and more recently Dee Center for being a caring sitter. Were very grateful to Hospice Austin, for the last 20+ months of care, especially Mary Burgess and Judy Sheffield, Penny, Gayle, Lori and Hanna. Wed also like to thank volunteers Rodney Macon and Kathy Soto. The family will receive friends from 2:00 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 1, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 2, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with Mr. John Akin officiating. Interment will follow at Capital Memorial Park in Pflugerville. Pallbearers will be Rick Akin, Hector Janse, Henry Hill, Allen Hill, David Hale and John Hale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N.
