Obituary

William R. (Bill) Britton died peacefully in Austin on November 17, 2017 at the age of 72 after a stoic battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born on January 23, 1945 to Bill and Peggy Britton, and he spent most of his childhood in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from Bel Air High School and The University of Texas at El Paso with a business degree. While at UTEP, he met Maureen Copeland and they married in 1968. Bill worked his way through college as a bank teller, before becoming President of a bank by 28 years old. His successful banking career ultimately brought him to Austin, TX in 1982.

Bill was an avid runner. He ran hundreds of miles a year from the hike and bike trail to the hills of Northern England. When traveling, he always looked for a new trail. He and Maureen also loved both the visual and the performing arts. Bill served on numerous boards including the Austin Lyric Opera, the Austin Children's Museum, One World Theatre, and Ballet Austin.

Most of all, Bill was a man who loved with all his heart and will be sorely missed by his family, friends and those whose lives he's enriched in so many ways. Even after the early onset of the disease, he volunteered at Mike's Place and spent hours reading to his mother-in-law at Buckner Villas. And, he never lost his appreciation for the small details and joys of life.

Bill leaves behind his wife of almost fifty years, Maureen Britton, his son William Ryan Britton and wife Nicola; his daughter Kelsey Davies and husband James; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Kelen Stout and husband Stewart; and brother Robert Guy Britton.

A celebration of his life is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21 at 10am at Emmaus Catholic Church at 1718 Lohmans Crossing Rd, Lakeway, TX 78734. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Association (alz.org.)
