William Jessie "George" Scott departed this world peacefully on January 31, 2017 with his loving wife Shirley by his side at Park Bend Health Center in Austin, Texas.
W.J. or George, as he was known by many, was born on January 14, 1928 to Clara Lee Johnson and Phil Scott. He was the third son of eight children and spent his youth in Buffalo Gap, Texas. On his 17th birthday in 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Pine Island, which was engaged in seaplane air-sea rescues in the Pacific until the end of WWII. In August, 1946, W.J. was released from active duty and returned to Abilene, Texas. In 1948, he married Claris "Dean" Whitley and they shared 35 years together raising three children, Joan Lynette, Jessie Michael, and Malinda Ann. After the loss of his wife Dean in 1982, he married Shirley Gayle Smith in 1988. Bringing together a loving new family with W.J.'s three children and Shirley's two children, Ellyn Maree and Alan Karl, along with his three grandsons and later four great grandchildren, they have enjoyed almost 29 years together.
He enjoyed a successful business career with Southwestern Bell for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was proud to serve on the Board of Directors of the Austin Telco Credit Union for 10 years.
W.J. was pre-deceased by his parents, sister Ima Jean Scott Ely, and four brothers Phil Ed, Glenn Herman, John Paul and Rex Scott. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Scott; two sisters, Christine Merrill and Mary "Mert" Swofford; his children, Joan Lynette Snead, Jessie Michael Scott and wife Ann, and Malinda Ann Randall and husband Steve, Ellyn Maree Smith and Alan Karl Smith and wife Nancy; three grandsons Aaron Scott, Josh Scott and Travis Martinez and four great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation in Austin at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78705 on Thursday, February 2nd from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
Visitation in the Abilene area, at Bailey Howard Funeral Home at 105 Oak Street, Clyde, Texas 79510 on Friday, February 3rd from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
A Graveside Funeral service will take place at Kendrick Cemetery in Denton Valley at the intersection of Highway 36 and FM 604 on Saturday, February 4th at 11:00 am.
