Obituary

Walter Leroy Harris, 83, passed away December 10, 2017.

Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Leroy graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1952, attended Del Mar College in Corpus and graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a degree in business. He served two years in the United States Army and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany working with an intelligence unit. He loved traveling throughout Europe while he was stationed there, feeding his love of history and culture.

After completing his military service, Leroy moved to Austin in 1959 to begin his career in banking at Capital National Bank. It was during his duties as a teller that he met his future wife, Dorothy, who he assisted each day as she made deposits for her employer. They married in 1962 and had daughter, Suzanne, in 1963.
Leroy completed 32 years of service at Capital National bank in downtown Austin, through its transition to Texas Commerce Bank and eventually under the ownership of Chase Bank, where he retired in 1991.

While love of family was his main priority, his faith was the cornerstone of his life. At the age of 12, he accepted Jesus Christ into his life at a Southern Baptist camp at Alta Frio in Leakey TX. That experience was a pinnacle moment, he often said, and some of his most treasured spiritual experiences occurred in church gatherings in Glorietta, New Mexico. He was a long-time member of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin and joined Austin Baptist Church when it opened in 2007.
Leroy's generosity of spirit and his kindness were apparent in the volunteer work he performed throughout his life, working within his community in Rollingwood to create a sports field, organizing events for the Optimist Club, offering his services wherever they were needed for his daughter's school, and was a regular blood donor to the local blood bank for decades. His gentle spirit and love flowed through his actions as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
He enjoyed gardening, listening to hymns and opera, and reading the bible. His favorite place on earth, other than being with his family, was Padre Island National Seashore.

Leroy is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Suzanne Singer and husband Geoffrey; grandson, Dylan Singer; sister, Joyce DeLoach and husband Garland, sister, Margaret Noneman and husband Ed; nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Lee Harris; mother, Jewel Runnels Stokes; and sister, Kay Martha Harris.
