Obituary for Wallace Lynn Lundgren

December 27, 1922 - December 24, 2017
Austin, Texas | Age 94

Wallace Lynn Lundgren of Austin, Texas died peacefully in the company of his family on Sunday, December 24, 2017.

Wallace was born on December 27, 1922 in Elgin, Texas to Luther and Ora Belle Lundgren. He attended the University of Texas where he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering.

Shortly after graduation, Wallace joined the Army Air Force and ultimately achieved the rank of Major. In World War II he flew 51 missions in the European Theatre, primarily as Pilot of a B-26 bomber. On December 23, 1944, when his plane was shot down over St. Vith, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, Wallace crash landed behind enemy lines and survived in bitter conditions until United States forces located his position. He flew his next mission three days later.

Wallace was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In 1943, he married Rosalie Robison of Gridley, Kansas. Wallace and Rosie raised their family in Corpus Christi, where they made dozens of lifelong friends. Wallace was a highly respected homebuilder and sold used cars on the side. Later in life he expanded on his career in car sales, owning dealerships in Luling, Seguin, Elgin and West. While his business varied throughout his life, Wallace's passion for aviation remained constant. When he wasn't at work or with his family, he was likely in the cockpit of his Cessna.

Later in life, Wallace and Rosie moved from Corpus Christi to Austin in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Wallace was an avid Texas Longhorns football fan and a regular attendee of home games. When he wasn't present at the stadium, he was watching from The Querencia retirement home, where he was a founding member. While at The Querencia, Wallace made many friends and enjoyed special treatment from its wonderful staff.

Wallace is survived by his younger brother Charles of Elgin, Texas, his younger sister Mary Anne Lundgren Lind of Houston, Texas, his son, Wallace Lundgren Jr., his daughter, Candace Lundgren Lochridge, his grandchildren, Zach Bolton, Blaire Mooney, Abby Martin, Ashley Floyd, Ellie Lochridge, Patton Lochridge, Joe Lochridge, Lloyd Lochridge, and his great grandchildren, Olivia, Luke, Blake, Jude, Jackson, Grey, Nora and Anne. Wallace is preceded in death by his daughter, Melodie Lundgren Bolton and his wife, Rosie.

In lieu of flowers, please cheer extra hard for the Texas Longhorns football team during their bowl game on the 27th, which also would have been Wallace's 95th birthday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Texas Baptists Children's Home: 1101 N Mays St, Round Rock, TX 78664.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 27th at Austin Baptist Church: 7016 Ribelin Ranch Dr., Austin, TX 78750
