Obituary

In the early morning hours of September 22, our beautiful family matriarch passed into the loving arms of God after a full and wonderful life of 104 years. Virgie Mae Ellison was born on December 31, 1913 to Clyde Thomas Ellison and Ora Mae Inman Ellison, the oldest of seven children.

Virgie graduated from Austin High School in 1932. In her 20's she married Ray Barnes. This marriage ended in divorce. She then began her long career with the Federal Aviation Administration, living in Honolulu, San Francisco, San Antonio, Amarillo, but spent the majority of her career in Houston. Being the fiercely independent woman that she was, while working for FAA, she got her pilot's license. In her words "if those dumb ole boys could do it, so can I!"

In 1966, she married James T. Sorrells. In 1968, she retired from FAA and she and Jim enjoyed their married life traveling to many wonderful places. After Jim's death in 1979, Virgie moved to Austin to be near her family. She joined the Central Christian Church where she made many new friends.

Virgie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, and all six of her siblings. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Peggy Davis, Terry Davis and wife Sherri, Stan Wyatt and wife Barbara, Marsha Blumhardt and husband Paul, Gary Wyatt, Carolyn Warnken and husband Mike, John Ellison and wife Freda, James Ellison and wife Michele, Kathie Krager, Barry Ellison and wife Jennifer, Debbie Tucker and husband Jeff, Judy Harper and husband Steve, and many great nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by Jim's family, especially grandson Jud Alexander and wife Jody, and was Gigi to their children Whitney Schultz, husband Ryan and sons William, Henry, and Samuel; Jud Alexander III; and Shelley Whelan, husband Ryan and daughter Mae.

The family would like to thank the loving staff of Westminster Health Care Center and Janie Medina who was her angel.

Visitation will be Friday, September 28, 11:30-1:00 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 in the Weed-Corley-Fish chapel with interment at Austin Memorial Park.
