Obituary

Thomas Hall "Tommy" Nelms, age 74, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 50 years and his two beloved children.

Tommy was born in Sherman, Texas on October 20, 1943 to Tom and Margaret Nelms. He grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from Lamar High School in 1961 where he was known as a star athlete. After graduation, Tommy earned a basketball scholarship at the University of Texas and played from 1961-1965. To date, Tommy and his father are the only father-son to play basketball at UT. While attending UT, Tommy was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and graduated with a BBA in 1966.

In 1967, Tommy and Gaye "Taylor" Willis were married and lived in Houston with their two children until they relocated to Austin in 1983. He was an active commercial real estate broker up until his passing. He loved putting together "deals" and did not believe in communicating with people via text, but instead relied heavily on verbal communication as evidenced by his still using a flip phone.

Tommy loved his two children and coached all their sports at an early age and was considered a second Dad by many of his children's friends. He absolutely loved the outdoors and made sure his family understood the importance of being outside and enjoying nature.

Among Tommy's most notable qualities was his one of a kind, cheerful and fun-loving personality. He made everyone who knew him feel special and he was special to everyone. He had a rare ability to make everyone feel at ease and his laughter was infectious. He was always happy, always positive and the life of every gathering.

One of Tommy's most notable achievements was his fishing show, The Reel Guys, on ESPN2 with his lifelong friend, Dr. Ken "Hoot" Ford of Houston. The Reel Guys featured fun filled fishing trips across the globe with many well-known personalities.

Tommy leaves behind his dearly loved wife of 50 years Gaye Taylor Nelms and his beloved children Kathryn Nelms Morford and husband Houston, son Tommy Nelms Jr. and wife Susan, his five treasured grandchildren Hagen, Zach and Grace Morford, Ty and Jordan Nelms. He also leaves behind two "much younger" brothers, nieces, nephew, many cousins and lifelong friends.

Tommy was known to his grandchildren as Pop. Because of his tremendous love for them, Pop made sure he attended all of their events. He was best known to his grandchildren for his famous Pop's Pancakes, golf cart rides, many fishing trips to the coast and his wonderful sense of humor and zest for life.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the Lakeway Church, at 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful doctors and nurses at Austin Cancer Center, Baylor Scott and White Lakeway and MD Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lakeway Church at 2203 Lakeway Blvd, Austin, Texas 78734 http://lakewaychurch.org/onlinegiving/ or the Leukemia Department at MD Anderson. https://gifts.mdanderson.org/default.aspx?tsid=8223&noamt=true&chosen=100&ref=General_FY17_Donate_Tab
