Obituary for Thomas McElhenney, Jr.

August 23, 1954 - August 28, 2018
Austin, Texas | Age 64

Thomas Rudd McElhenney Jr. was born in Austin, at St. David's with no AC at midnight on August 23, 1954. He grew up in Houston while his father was doing his residency in the Texas Children's Hospital. The family moved to Austin, in 1958, where Dr. McElhenney established a thriving medical practice.

Tom attended O'Henry Junior High and Austin High, graduating in 1973. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock (joining the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, following in his father's footsteps) for a few years before returning to Austin to open a nightclub, the New Soap Creek Saloon. After a few years of running with Willie Nelson and other Austin country stars, he returned to Houston where he worked as a counselor with at-risk youth as part of Communities In Schools. Inspired by this work, Tommy went back to college and received his BA in Psychology from the University of Houston.

Tom returned to Austin and ran a successful nursery in West Austin, named Park Place Gardens, for 15 years. In 2004 he followed his dream and moved to Sayulita, Mexico and built his fantastic home, VillaPcaso ( as a rental investment property. He lived in his beloved paradise until he was diagnosed with lung cancer in June of 2017.

He is survived by his mother, Ada McElhenney, his sister Amy McElhenney Barbee and her two children Read Barbee and Ada Barbee, and his brother John Oakley McElhenney and his two children Jason Philip McElhenney and Claire Oakley McElhenney.

He loved his family, his birds, and his long line of Alfa Romeos. Tommy was a great dancer and loved to entertain all of us with his stories, his hilarious FaceTime antics and his wicked Mexican Train moves. He will be dearly missed by all of us as he joins his sister, Sidney McElhenney, in Heaven.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice Austin in Tom's name. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Drive, Austin, TX 78757.
