August 29, 1947 - November 28, 2016
Austin, Texas | Age 69
Thomas David Porter, born on November 29, 1947, in Austin, Texas, died on November 28, 2016, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Dave was a lifelong resident of Austin and a Texan to the core. He graduated from the University of Texas with both masters and bachelors degrees in the honors program (Plan II) and was a proud member of the Longhorn Band. He continued to play trumpet until this last year with the Texas Alumni Band. Dave bled orange and celebrated Texas Independence Day with fervor. As an accomplished trumpet player, he had the privilege of playing a duet with Doc Severinsen.
Dave enjoyed life on Lake Travis with his wife of 33 years, Patricia Parres Porter, where they enjoyed sailing, watching sunsets, and drinking red wine. Dave loved to travel and he and Pat spent many vacations in in the Caribbean and had a special fondness for New Orleans, where they spent their honeymoon. Dave was a loving father and an extraordinary son, who took special care of his mother, Bettie, making sure of her care and spending time with her every week.
Dave was in the Air Force where he was stationed in North Dakota. He joked about his "banishment" and guarding missile silos. This was the only time in his life he lived outside of the Austin area. He had an amazing career in the financial/securities world where he founded Spicewood Securities. Even after Dave was diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment, he spent hours each day trading online and watching all the markets from open to close. His amazing mind and abilities lasted to the very end. Dave had a special bond with his clients—many of whom had been with him for decades.
Dave is survived by his wife, Pat, sons, David James, Brian and Andy. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas A. Porter, and mother, Bettie Quinn Porter.
Services will be Thursday, December 15, at 3 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Event Center in Lakeway. Pat would like everyone to wear some burnt orange or a Hawaiian shirt in honor of Dave. Reception after at Lake Travis Wine Trader.
