Obituary

Sue Harper Kone Drake died peacefully on November 26, 2017. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother of three, grandmother of six, great-grandmother of ten and a friend to many. She lived a life full of service to her family and community and will be greatly missed.

Sue was born to Samuel Guy and Marilee Fisher Kone in Yuma, Arizona on February 21, 1921, the youngest of four girls. The family moved to Austin, Texas, when Sue was seven years old. She attended Wooldridge Elementary, University Junior High and Stephen F. Austin High School. While at The University of Texas, she interrupted her studies to join her lifelong friend Liz (Sutherland) Carpenter to support the war effort by working for the War Department in Washington, D.C.

On July 29th, 1944, Sue married Chester Myrick (Mike) Drake Jr. at Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia, where Mike had graduated from Virginia Military Institute. They were happily married 49 years before his death in 1993.

Community service and involvement were second nature to Sue. She was a devoted member of the Junior League of Austin, serving as president in 1959-1960. She was also involved with Junior Helping Hand, Austin Women's Forum, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Colonial Dames of America. For many years she served as the choir mother at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Inspired by her work within the community, later in life Sue went on to earn her masters in Curriculum Instruction from Southwest Texas State University and to become an administrator at the Texas School for the Deaf.

Sue loved to explore; she and her sister Bobbie traveled the globe together well into their 90's. Her great love of opera took her all over the world - from Covent Garden to La Scala to viewing a performance of Aida amongst the pyramids in Egypt. Her other passions included gardening, sewing, genealogy research, and entertaining. She was very much the center of her family and happily hosted every holiday gathering, large Sunday lunches, and many a party for family and friends.

Affectionately known as "Gamma," Sue leaves behind her loving children: Chester Myrick (Mickey) Drake III, Barbara Drake Pitts, and John Holmes Drake and his wife Margaret. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Molly Drake Elder and husband Brett; Rebecca (Becky) Suzanne Drake; Christian Drake Drake and husband Brandon; John Robert Pitts Jr. and wife Lesley; James (Jamie) Drake Pitts; and Catharine Drake Madeley and husband Aaron; along with ten great-grandchildren: Drake, Virginia and Katie Elder; Emily and Lauren Drake; Grant and Harper Drake; and John, Sterling and Caroline Pitts; as well as her sisters, Marilee Kone Scaff and Barbara (Bobbie) Kone Jackson. She is preceded in death by her parents, Marilee Fisher and Samuel Guy Kone, husband Chester Myrick Drake Jr., and her sister Jane Kone Jackson.

Funeral Services will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on Thursday, November 30th at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made on her behalf to: The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd or The San Francisco Opera. Pallbearers will be Brett Elder, Brandon Drake, Aaron Madeley, Lesley Pitts, Drake Elder and Grant Drake.

We will all greatly miss Gamma, yet we know that she will live on in our hearts always.
