Obituary for Sandra Jean "Sandi" Thompson

February 24, 1945 - September 9, 2017
West Lake Hills, Texas | Age 72

Sandra Jean "Sandi" Thompson, 72, of Austin, Texas went to be with the Lord Saturday, September 9, 2017 surrounded by her children.

Sandi was born February 24, 1945 in Asheville, North Carolina. Sandi grew up in Asheville as a friendly, outspoken youth who touched the lives of everyone she met. As a youth, Sandi was the lead performer in her Senior play, an avid water-skier and a member of the Lake Lure Ski Club. Sandi could often be found at Lake Lure performing water-skiing tricks, including climbing to the top of multi-person pyramids. She even won Miss Congeniality three years in a row in the Ski Club Beauty Pageant. Sandi continued to vacation at Lake Lure all her life and skied at every opportunity into her 70's. A highlight of everybody's Fourth of July at Lake Lure was the sight of Sandi skiing by with an American flag streaming out behind her.

After high school, Sandi briefly attended the University of North Carolina – Charlotte before deciding to move to California. In California, Sandi attended Foothill Junior College, then San Jose State University where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Business. While in college, Sandi worked for Lockheed LMSC where she met the love of her life, Bob Thompson. Bob and Sandi finished their degrees together and married in 1965. Bob and Sandi were the definition of soulmates. Where you found one, it was rare that you would not find the other until his passing in 2005.

In 1982, Bob and Sandi moved to Austin with their three children. They raised their children in West Lake Hills where Sandi was extremely involved both at West Lake Hills Presbyterian Church and Riverbend Baptist Church. Sandi worked for a time in accounting but her passion was working with children. Whether it was teaching Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, or her preschool class at Riverbend, Sandi loved to teach and relished all the excitement and enthusiasm that a room full of young minds could bring to bear. Sandi brought an unmatched, and non-traditional, creative energy to her lesson plans. Whether it was throwing a frisbee with a star painted on it through the church to tell the kids about shepherds seeing a star shoot through the sky or standing on a rickety table to show them how tall Goliath was, Sandi always knew how to deliver information to children in such a way as to be educational and utterly unforgettable.

Sandi also enjoyed donating her time to various charities including Manos de Cristo and Blue Santa. When not teaching or giving of herself to others, Sandi was a regular at the YMCA where she would work out when she had to but the hot tub and steam room were definitely her favorite. Sandi approached everything in life with a positive vibrant energy. She loved to laugh and dance and had a deep appreciation for all the small things in life. She cherished and beauty and wonder of God's creation and reveled in every day that she was here to enjoy it with the people she loved.

Sandi is survived by her mother, Sara Ruth Duncan, three children, Scott (Ana), Christopher (Suzanne), and Joy (Nick), two grandchildren, David and Sara, and a large extended family that will miss her bright personality and infectious laugh dearly. Sandi has requested cremation and for her ashes to be spread at Lake Lure where she will be rejoined with her beloved Bob.

A Memorial service will be held at West Lake Hills Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 2:00 with a reception immediately following. In celebration of Sandi's life please wear colorful attire. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Blue Santa. You may text to donate at 512-400-3088 or visit
