Obituary

Sandra "Sandie" Riedel Scalco, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday April 27, 2018 at age 75.

Sandie was born in Cleveland Ohio on December 12, 1942 to the late Victor Riedel and the late Patricia Lowe Riedel. She was the oldest of three children. At age 13 she and her family moved to Hillsboro, Ohio. After high school, she moved to Cincinnati and held many jobs as a young adult. Her long career in retail began at age 22 and flourished, starting from working the floor, moving to Buyer and finally to Merchandise Division Manager, where she headed up both Retail Operations and many Buyers at larger department stores, including Scarborough's Department Stores here in Austin. She retired in 1980 to devote herself to her family and community.

Sandie is survived by her husband of 38 years, Vince Scalco, her step-daughter Christy Scalco McGuire (husband Scott), her son Vinnie Scalco (wife Jenny), and her three grandchildren Emily, McKenzie, and Nicholas. She is also survived by her sister Patty Riedel Roades (husband Larry), her brother Terry Riedel (wife Carol), her two nephews Brad and Brian Roades, her niece Brandy Riedel Bennett, and their families.

She was active in many organizations including: Austin Symphony League, Austin Ballet Guild, Natural Science Center (heading the Safari at Zilker in '92), Austin Woman's Club, Austin Woman's Forum, 8212 Club at Barton Creek CC, St John Neumann OPUS, St John Neumann's Summit Support Group, and Ladies of the Dejeuner.

Sandie was dedicated fully to her entire extended family and their interests, and was very active in all their lives. She was also of immense support to her husband in his local CPA firm, now Scalco Johnson Leahy Dudek CPAs. She was both an accomplished hostess and great cook. She had a natural warmth about her that made any visitor in their home feel they were the guest of honor no matter the occasion. Her sense of humor was boundless and intuitive for its timing. She was loved by many and had a way of touching most of the people she met. She will be sorely missed by all.

Memorial Services will be held at St John Neumann Catholic Church, 5455 Bee Caves Road, on Tuesday May 8, 2018 at 2 pm.
