Samuel Perez Guerra, 87, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon. Sam was born November 5, 1929 at his home in Austin Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leonita "Nonie" Teneyuque Guerra with whom he was married for 52 years. Samuel is survived by his three daughters, Carla Sewell husband Gary Sewell, Jeanette Hodge husband Darrell Hodge, and Annette Wood; grandchildren, Christopher "C.J." Chandler, Aaron Wood, and Melinda Hodge; great-grandchildren, Adriana Chandler and Leonardo "Leo" Chandler. Sam was the oldest of his three siblings; Ruth Ramirez, Alex Guerra, and Gloria Williams.

Sam served in the Army during the Koran War and traveled to Europe with the basketball team. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the South Austin Lions club. Sam played maracas and M.C.'d with the Nash Hernandez band. He volunteered at the South Austin Recreation Center coaching basketball. He and Nonie were active members of the PTA and band boosters while their daughters went to Travis. He worked as a printer for the Texas Agriculture Department for 15 years. He then decided to go to Southwest Texas State University to get his teaching certification and worked at Travis High School with handicapped special education students.

Sam enjoyed dancing with his wife. He was always active walking and working with plants in his yard. Recently, Sam enjoyed old Westerns, including Bonanza and The Virginian.

The family wants to express their thanks to his many caregivers: Belinda Aguillon "Mama Bel", you were always Dad's "Bel", Jack Adams, George Hicklin, Brenda Lane, Sophie Ortega, Olga Avila, and Hospice Austin. Thank you all for caring for him with dignity and respect and for the love you have shown.

Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 18 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress.

Funeral Mass 10:00 am Thursday, October 19 at San Jose Catholic Church.

Interment will be at Assumption Cemetery.
