Obituary

Bella Ruth Hinton Randolph (Ruth) passed into eternal life on May 2, 2018

Ruth was born to Claude S. and Bella Watson Hinton on October 17, 1925 in Gonzales County, Texas. She grew up in Gonzales, attending Gonzales public schools. She took piano lessons and participated in rhythm band while in elementary school, beginning a lifelong love of music and song. She was in choir and was a cheerleader as a high school student. Ruth attended the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in business and graduating in 1947. She served as a secretary and administrative assistant for the Austin Independent School District and the Texas Education Agency.

On January 14, 1956, Ruth married George A. Randolph, Jr. Their only child, Mary Faye, was born two years later. After Mary Faye began elementary school, Ruth went back to work as a preschool teacher at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Preschool and later at Good Shepherd Episcopal School. While serving as a half-day teacher, Ruth never failed to make George and Mary Faye the center of her life, sewing dance costumes and attending every school event. During summers the family traveled throughout the United States on vacations. Ruth, George, and Mary Faye were season ticket holders for University of Texas baseball, with mother and daughter continuing to attend games after George passed away. Ruth always listened to away games on radio. Ruth loved the Longhorns competing in all sports.

The dedication that Ruth showed to First United Methodist Church of Austin shined in her teaching of three generations of Sunday school children, the design and creation of beautiful worship banners, and active participation in Bible study. Her faith in the Lord was unwavering.

For the past seven years Ruth lived at Brookdale Spicewood Springs (formerly Emeritus). Mary Faye wants to thank the staff for their care. Ruth was provided individual care by caregivers from Nurses Unlimited, especially Terron, Raven, Veronica, and Anita, who made sure that she attended every music program, at which Ruth usually sang along.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister Bess Gerst, and brother-in-law Jim Gerst. She is survived by daughter Mary Faye Randolph of Austin, niece Shelley Page (Curtis), great-niece Margaret Williams (Matt), great-niece Caroline Page, all of Austin, and great-nephew James Page of Dallas, and great-great-niece and nephew Caroline and Ford Williams.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Ruth Randolph will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca Street, at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018. A family graveside will be held on Monday, May 7, 2018.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Children's Ministry or Handbell Ministry at First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca Street, Austin, Texas.
