Obituary for Robert Louis McCarley

June 1, 1963 - February 19, 2018
Austin, Texas | Age 54

Robert Louis McCarley, age 54, of Austin, Texas, and winner of the Mardi Gras 2002 Central Market Annual Gumbo Contest, began cooking for Jesus on Monday, February 19, 2018. Robert was born on June 1, 1963, in Beaumont, Texas, to John Nelson McCarley and Bettie Sue Smith. He grew up in Lufkin, Texas, where he cooked up trouble with his running buddies, but those are stories you will have to hear from one of them! Meanwhile, he made his parents proud by his many accomplishments in track and golf, artistic skills, drumming, and academics. He was a good son; often humorously referred as "The Golden Child" by his elder brother and younger sister. But joking aside, Robert was a great brother. He was a good friend and taught his siblings many things. Mostly he taught them to have fun and enjoy the moment; don't take things too seriously and make life a journey.

Robert graduated from Stephen F. Austin in 1987 with a bachelors degree in Business. There he enjoyed brewing up a big pot of gumbo to share with all his friends on the weekends. He became so well known for this, that if he just cooked it, they would come. It beat studying at IHOP! After graduation, he began selling insurance for Farmer's where he has won many awards for his exceptional work performance and more importantly, where he made his network of co-workers and friends his family for over twenty years. Along the way, he became a family man.

Robert also enjoyed cooking said gumbo for his family—and especially ate up the compliments they gave him! He also enjoyed spending time with friends at Flores Mexican Restaurant, and perusing the HEB aisle on a daily basis. He was a devoted father—always volunteering to chauffeur them to school and practices, and to coach various neighborhood sports teams through the years. Robert enjoyed many different activities including golf, tennis, running, boating, going to live concerts, and attending Riverbend Church. Robert's contagious smile and infectious laughter always brought joy to those around him. He was a devoted husband to his wife, caring father to his children, and a dear friend to many.

Robert will be greatly missed by those he left behind, including his two children, John Colin McCarley and Katherine Taylor McCarley; his sweetheart, Sarah Kinsey; his brother, Mike McCarley and his wife Shari of Bryan; his sister, Julie Trimnal and her husband Billy of Bryan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Koehl McCarley, and his parents listed above.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis, 411 Ranch Road 620 South, Lakeway, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018, at Smith Chapel at Riverbend Church, 4214 N. Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, TX 78746. Interment will follow for family only at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive in Austin.
