Obituary

McDaniel, Robert
February 22, 1950 - October 3, 2018

Robert "Bob" McDaniel was born in Springfield Missouri. Robert and his family moved from Springfield to Topeka, Kansas, Mission, Kansas, Omaha, Nebraska, Dallas, Texas, and Louisville, Kentucky. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

He met his future wife, Carol Louise Conn, when he was a junior at Westport High School in Louisville. They were married on April 7, 1974 three days after an EF4 tornado wiped out much of Louisville. Robert lost everything in the tornado except for the wedding ring, which he had in his pocket. The couple were married for 44 years.

Robert excelled at baseball and golf growing up. Later, his main interests were music, magic, and movies. At age 13, he heard the Beatles on KLIF radio in Dallas and it changed his life. He took up the guitar and played in numerous bands in Dallas and Louisville. One of his groups had two songs on Top Forty radio and opened for several well-known groups including The Beach Boys and Canned Heat. During retirement, Robert composed and recorded instrumental music intended for TV and film.

When Robert and Carol moved to Austin in 1976, Robert had to find a "real" job other than music and he went to work for the Texas Department of Human Services. He worked there for 25 years. He eventually became the Director of Printing for TDHS and later all the Texas Health and Human Services agencies. Robert retired in 2003 after a rewarding career in Texas State government.

Robert was a magician at the age of 11. He performed at birthday parties, school carnivals, libraries, hospitals, etc. and he became very interested in close-up magic at age 21. Two of Robert's card magic books were published and several original tricks appeared in magic magazines, such as Genii Magazine, in the early 1980s. He became quite accomplished in close-up magic and mentalism in his later years.

Robert was also a serious film buff and had an extensive collection of movies. His favorite genre was always classic 1950's / 60's horror and science fiction films.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Mac and Jan McDaniel. Robert is survived by his beautiful, sweet wife, Carol, and their beloved pets, Arrow, Chuy, and Felix. He also leaves behind his wonderful sister, Ann Stinson, brother-in-law Ken Stinson, six amazing nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Robert's ashes will be scattered on the Pedernales River in an informal family gathering.
