Richard was an accomplished athlete in High School and College. A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana, he pursued a career in teaching and coaching. He enjoyed mentoring students, encouraging young minds to achieve their best, and coaching multiple sports including football, basketball, track-and-field, baseball, and golf. He retired in 1998 and soon moved to Pflugerville to focus time and energy on his family.

In his retirement years, Richard enjoyed spending any opportunity with his grandchildren whether at home or following their many activities. Soon after his daughter's passing in 2001, both Richard and Cheryl joined the Pflugerville Police Department volunteer program for citizen's Victim Services. In 2004, both received recognition as volunteers of the year for their efforts. Richard maintained a close connection to the local first responders for well over a decade.
