On March 15, 2017 Paula Ruth "Cookie" Miller went to be with her Lord and Savior following a long battle with Carcinoid Cancer.
Paula was born on July 21, 1935 in San Angelo, Texas to Dr. and Mrs. Paul Knittel. She graduated from San Angelo High School in 1953 and from Texas Lutheran University in 1957 with a BS in Elementary Education.
She married Clifford Miller in June of 1958 and taught school in Austin, Bridgeport, Fairfax County, VA and in Midland until the birth of her son, Walter Paul in May of 1965.
While living in Midland, Paula taught and later served as the Director of the Midland Lutheran Palestra Preschool. She was active in the Lutheran church serving on the North Texas – Louisiana Synod council and various boards and church councils as her family moved from Midland to Bay City then later to Shreveport and finally to Austin.
After moving to Austin in 1992, Paula continued her involvement in church activities at Saint Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She served on the school board and served as the interim director of St. Martin's preschool. She was actively involved in the downtown alliance of churches and helped with the Mobile Loaves & Fishes program. She was responsible for managing the Mobile Loaves & Fishes kitchen at the United Methodist Church until her cancer diagnosis in 2012.
Cookie loved her grandchildren. Prior to battling cancer, she never wanted to miss a dance recital, school play, Grandparent's Day, a big game or any other event she could attend that involved her grandchildren Bailey, Blaine, Colin and Izzy. She loved everything about being a grandmother – her grandchildren brightened her world.
Paula was blessed with three amazing doctors who battled beside her against Carcinoid Cancer – Dr. Lowell Anthony of Lexington Kentucky, Dr. Shaun McKenzie of Austin and Dr. Dudley Youman of Austin. These three men provided hope and three and half healthy years to spend with her family.
She was also blessed with two wonderful caregivers, Rosy Vasquez and Brenda Moore who showed amazing love and compassion. A special thank you to the staff members of Hospice of Austin, especially Rosa-Maria and Yatie. These ladies were not only nurses but friends who allowed Paula to pass away peacefully at home.
Paula is survived by her husband, Clifford Miller; son, Walter with his wife Alice and grandchildren, Colin and Isabella; her daughter, Ginger with husband Michael and grandchildren, Bailey and Blaine; her sister-in-law, Jean Knittel; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Paul Knittel; and her brother, William Knittel precede her in death.
A Service in celebration of Paula's life is being held at Saint Martin's Lutheran Church, 606 15th Street W, Austin on March 18, 2017 at 11:00 am. Paula will be laid to rest at a private Graveside Service in San Angelo, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the scholarship fund at Saint Martin's Lutheran Church Preschool or a charity of your choice.
