Obituary for Nivia Castillo Smith

June 16, 1939 - May 25, 2017
Austin, Texas | Age 77

Nivia was born June 16, 1939 in Kenedy, TX to Jesus and Julia Castillo. She was the eldest of six children. Our precious mother was called home to be with the Lord on May 25, 2017.

She loved her family dearly and was a devoted daughter, sister, wife and most of all a loving mother. Being the eldest, she was always helping her younger brothers and sisters. She began to work part-time at Levines Department Store in Corpus Christi, TX as a young adult working through college. She would help her mother by buying all necessities required from clothes to groceries. Mostly on Saturdays, her mother would love to make her beautiful dresses to go dancing at La Villita. So every weekend she wore a new dress made by her dearly beloved mother. One thing about Nivia, she loved to dance.

After graduating high school in San Diego, TX in 1957, she began college at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX. Due to her hard work ethics and commitment, she became a License Vocational Nurse. A career she enjoyed for 41 years upon retiring in December of 1999.

Well established in her career, she met and married a former Military young man by the name of Meliton L. Gonzalez who became the father of their three children, Mel, Nivia Judith (Judy) and Blanca Estela. The family would reside in Austin, Texas.

Using her nursing skills that her father helped her attain while in college, when he became ill, she would help her father. Being originally from San Diego, TX. She made the sacrifice that would in turn commit herself to move back home along with her three children to help her mother with her ailing father. She took great care of her father until he passed away in 1972.

Life turned a page in 1982, she would meet and marry Dorris Allen Smith. They would live happily together until his passing in August 2003.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents; her husband Dorris Allen Smith.

Nivia is survived by her children, Mr. Mel C. Gonzalez, Ms. Nivia Judith (Judy) Gutierrez, Mrs. Blanca E. Gonzalez-Hernandez and husband John all of Austin, TX; two grandchildren, Mr. James (JJ) Gutierrez, Jr., Ms. Veronica Estella Garcia all from Austin, TX; four great-grandchildren, Destiny Faith, Joe Angel, Angel Lou Estella and Rolando Angel; five siblings, Mr. Jesus G.
