"GrandNan"

Obituary

Nancy Howell Carlile Green (or GrandNan, and she was known by her grandchildren), age 89, was born January 17, 1929 in Burnet County Texas to Silas Stuart Howell minister and public school administrator and William (Willie) Ward Pearson Howell.

A proud, fifth generation Texan, she was the granddaughter of Dr. William Asa Howell and Mary Elizabeth Warner Howell of Burnet, where she was raised.

After graduating from Abilene Christian University, she began her teaching career in Corpus Christi, TX. In the summer of 1953, Nancy was in Europe during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II – this was one of her favorite memories.

After he proposed a third time, Nancy said "yes" to Winford Harold Carlile - they were married in Llano, TX on August 15, 1953. Together, Nancy and Winford raised three daughters in Lovington, NM. Nancy taught various years in the Lovington School District and was a member of Third and Central Church of Christ.

Nancy's greatest loves were her family, homemaking and creating lasting memories; her dedication to all of these pursuits are well remembered by family and close friends. Her other lifelong interests included gardening, home decorating, sewing, cooking, entertaining and annual trips with the Le Grande Dames.

In 1992, Nancy married Arthur Clair Green; they moved to Austin and shared a love of travel and a passion for genealogy that lasted until his death in 2014. Nancy was a member of Western Hills Church of Christ.

Sharing a love of genealogy with her sister Virginia Yancy, Nancy was a documented member of twelve hereditary organizations, including the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne, Jamestowne Society, Magna Charta Dames, Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the Confederacy and the Ligon-Lygon Family Association.

Survivors include her daughter, Paige Carlile Kerr of Austin, son in law, Nick Stevens, grandchildren Brandon (Marisol) Miller, Silas Miller, Lauren Stevens, Nicklaus (Brittany) Stevens, Lexy (Jonathon) Christner, and Isabelle Kerr, and four great grandchildren.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clair, daughters Catherine Carlile Sims and Sarah Carlile Stevens, and granddaughter Lygon Elizabeth Stevens.

All who knew Nancy will remember her as one of the sweetest, most selfless women they have ever known. In later years, she bravely traversed the challenges inflicted by Parkinson's Disease until it was time to move on to a "better" address.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, from 2-4pm at Weed-Corley-Fish, (2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas). A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzback Road, San Antonio, TX), with her nephew, Mark Howell, officiating and David Morreti, Hospice Austin chaplain, speaking.

Special thanks to Hospice Austin, dear friends Julie Johnson, Sawyer Ward, the Blackman and Nolan families, Rachel Howell and to all of Nancy's Circle C neighbors.
