Obituary for Mertice Foster Wilson

June 25, 1918 - January 13, 2018
Waelder, Texas | Age 99

Mertice Foster Wilson joined her late husband, Herbert Woodrow "Woody" Wilson, in heaven on January 13, 2018. She was with her family who throughout her long life provided her comfort, joy and companionship.

Mertice was born on June 25, 1918 in Lubbock County, Texas, to Clydia Oldham Foster and Thomas Nugent Foster.

While attending North Texas State Teachers College (now The University of North Texas) in Denton, she met Woody Wilson. They married on May 27, 1937, and were married 51 years before he passed.

The couple raised three children: Bette Wilson Wentworth, the late Mark Woodrow Wilson, and Sarah Wilson Nunes. She is survived by her seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was a favorite aunt for many nieces and nephews.

The many people who knew Mertice often describe her as good-natured, hospitable, and smart with a dry sense of humor. She often entertained friends, she spent 10 years as a proofreader for the Texas State Legislature, and was active in her church and the Couples Class Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church, Austin, where she was a member for 60 years. The last ten years of her life were spent in Gonzales County living with her family.

Her strong Christian faith carried her through many difficult times including the Depression and the long illness and death of her husband and adult son. She had a grateful heart and often said she had had a very happy life. She was truly an elegant lady in every way.

Mertice was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew her, but her kindness, humor and strength will continue in the memories of friends and family.

Her family is especially grateful to long-time friend Betty Marie House for her devotion and companionship to Mertice.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar, Austin, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.

In memory of Mertice, the family requests donations be made to a charity of choice or The Alzheimer's Association.
