Obituary

Mary Kathleen Vance, 67, of Leander, Texas was called home to the Lord's Kingdom in Heaven as she passed away suddenly, surrounded by her family and loved ones on June 16th, 2018 at St. David's North Austin Medical Center in Austin, Texas.

Kathy, as she preferred to be called, was a devout Christian, with a beautiful, loving soul. She was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She is preceded in death by her son-Charles Paul Beaver, her sister-Margie Aubert and her parents-Esther Louise (Clark) and Ben Dragoo.

She is survived by her family: Husband Richard Vance, residing in Leander, Texas; her daughter Rebecca Kathleen and husband Steven DeLeonardis, residing in Colorado Springs, Colorado; her son Daniel Rodriguez, residing in Leander, Texas; Rebecca's children-son Richard and daughter Lauren Kathleen; Paul's daughter- Samantha Kathleen, and a great grandson. She is also survived by her sister-Barbara Knopps of Scottsboro, Alabama; brother-Timothy Dragoo and wife Dorothee of Mokena, Illinois; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Kathy was beloved by many. She never met a stranger-many say they were welcomed by her as if she'd known them her entire life. She endeared herself to people of all ages and walks of life, becoming known as "Mom" by many family friends. She was a huge personality. Her capacity for humor and witty jokes, her unforgettable, grandiose laugh and her incredibly generous and caring heart is surpassed only by her penchant for storytelling. One could-and often would-sit for hours and listen to her talk about her experiences, adventures, her history and life lessons. She was the life of the party and could charm the pants off of anyone she met. She definitely had strong opinions and convictions and wasn't afraid to share them with you if she saw fit. Her favorite thing, though, was being surrounded by her family and friends, whether in the kitchen cooking or trying new recipes, singing in her beautiful voice(you could always hear a tune flowing from wherever she was-her favorite was "Crazy" by Patsy Cline), gathering and reminiscing about days gone by, sharing in family traditions or just joking and laughing. She was a Pistol.

Kathy was born on April 7th, 1951 in Tullahoma, Tennessee, to Esther Louise (Clark) and Ben Dragoo. She spent her young life in Orland Park, Illinois where her parents settled after Ben's service in the Army.

After high school, she was a waitress. She was married and divorced and had three children when she was working for Better Business Bureau and was noticed for her larger-than-life personality and gift for "gab", and was asked to join John Hancock as an insurance agent. She studied and obtained her licensure and quickly rose to become the top selling agent in the company. She received many awards and recognitions.

In 1984, Kathy and her children joined her sister Margie in San Antonio, Texas. She continued excelling in the insurance industry, working for MetLife and Prudential, where she retired from in 1997. Kathy moved to Austin, Texas with her daughter Rebecca and grandson in 1998, and not long after met the love of her life-Richard Vance of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. They were married in October of 1999 and settled in Leander, Texas where she lived until her passing.

Her life was full of rich experiences and unbelievable adventures, but also unimaginable hardships, heartache, and pain. She credited her strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for getting her through. Even in her later years, when she could no longer walk or live without pain, she relied on her Lord, her resolve and her grit to keep her going. Her unwavering belief and strength was the foundation on which she lived and loved and that will be her legacy.

Please join us in celebrating her. There will be a viewing for Kathy from 12p.m. to 1p.m., Saturday, June 23rd at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 1200 S. Bagdad Rd. in Leander. The funeral service will begin at 1p.m. A reception will follow immediately after. We will honor Kathy's wish to be cremated.
