Obituary for Marsha Dingle McCary

January 21, 1943 - January 28, 2018
Austin, Texas | Age 75

Marsha Dingle McCary passed away on January 28, 2018. She was born on January 21, 1943 at Langley Field, Virginia to John Ewing Dingle and Mary Hurlbut Dingle while her father served as a pilot with the Army Air Corps during WWII. She spent her early years in the home of her maternal grandparents and her doting aunt Martha Hurlbut Shelton in Brownwood, Texas. After the war, the family settled in Freeport, TX where she spent most of her youth, graduating as Valedictorian from Brazosport High School in 1961. The Dingles were known for their community involvement, often hosting friends and family at their house on the San Bernard River.

She attended the University of Texas at Austin and is an alumna of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 3 years and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She earned her Master's in Mathematics the following year. Marsha married Roger Glynn McCary in 1965. Roger was also a member of the Brazosport class of '61 and a UT alumnus. They raised two daughters, Erin and Leigh, as well as Roger's young sister, Susan.

Marsha received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas in 1980. She furthered her clinical expertise by training in British Object Relations, couples and family track, at the Washington, D.C. School of Psychiatry in 1991. Since 1981, she has maintained a full time private practice providing psychotherapy to adults and couples, and consultation and supervision to students and professionals in mental health fields. She has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Psychology at UT Austin, a Consulting Psychologist at the Faulkner Center Substance Abuse program, and a member of the Austin-Travis County Mental Health and Policy Advisory Committee.

Following in her father's footsteps, Marsha was a firm believer in giving back to her community. She was a founding Member and Past President of the Austin Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology and expanded her work into a much broader community by serving as Treasurer, Member at Large, and Council Representative for the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association. She assisted in the creation of The Division 39 Fund which recognizes and promotes the contributions of Psychoanalysis to psychology as a science and as a profession. Marsha was known and admired for her generosity and for the diligence and excellence with which she carried out what ever task she took on.

She enjoyed traveling - in particular walking trips in Italy with close friends. She was an avid reader, a great appreciator of classical music and opera, and enjoyed long daily walks. Her warmth, intelligence and intellectual curiosity will be dearly missed by her large circle of family, friends, and colleagues.

Marsha is survived by her daughters, Leigh Susan McCary and Erin McCary Nathan; grandchildren, Glynna McCary Nathan, Laurel Frances Nathan, and Axel John Waters; her sister, Laura Ann Smith; sisters-in-laws, Susan McCary Tallerine and Ann McCary Moore and her aunt, Martha Hurlbut Shelton as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3rd at Weed-Corley-Fish on North Lamar with a reception to follow.
