Obituary

Marie Leopold McPherson departed this life to be with our Lord on February 13, 2018. Born Marie Lois Leopold to Dr. and Mrs. Henry Leopold on February 19, 1941, she went to primary school at St. Mary's Hall and middle and high school at Alamo Heights in San Antonio, Texas. Marie attended the University of Texas at Austin where she earned a BA in Home Economics, after which she attended Parsons School of Design in New York City. Marie met her husband to be, Ben McPherson, at UT Austin and they were married September 25, 1965 at St. David's Episcopal Church, San Antonio. She began teaching during her first years of marriage while Ben was in the U.S. Navy. Marie taught for over 30 years, including 26 years at Cambridge Elementary School, earning her Masters of Education while teaching full-time and raising three daughters. She retired in 2010.

Marie always maintained hobbies including cooking, which led her to start a catering company, Two Cooks, with a friend from Austin. Other hobbies included sewing elaborate Christmas stockings for her family, reading voraciously, making complex patterned quilts, and beading necklaces of many ethnic styles.

Marie was lovingly cared for at home by Ben and family and by Mable Rector of Sister's Care at Incarnate Word Village, who has been a blessing.

Marie survived the death of her parents and one brother, Henry. She is survived by her husband of fifty three years, Benjamin; brother John; and daughters Jennifer, Sarah, and Alice. She leaves grandchildren Madeline and Tom Rosas, Benjamin, Henry, Catie and Natalie Bowland, and Hannah and James Pierce; and two great grandchildren, Theodore and Elijah.

Marie will be remembered for her creativity, patience, generous spirit, humility, and loving kindness. She adored teaching, especially writing and poetry, sponsored an annual poetry magazine at Cambridge, as well as helping many students publish pieces in the Pegasus Magazine.

Marie will be interred at Austin Memorial Park beside many of Ben's family. A Memorial Service will follow at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20th. A reception will follow in the church parish hall. There will be a memorial service in San Antonio, with details to follow.

Donations in Marie's memory can be made to Sisters Care at the Incarnate Word Village, 4707 Broadway, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
