Obituary for Marie "Dee Dee" Moreland

March 7, 1937 - November 29, 2017
Austin, Texas | Age 80

E. Marie "Dee Dee" Payne Moreland graced this world when she was born on March 7, 1937 in Austin, Texas to Samuel Ellison Payne and Esse Marie Ashley Payne. A lifetime resident of Austin, Marie attended Rosedale Elementary, Baker Junior High and McCallum High School. Following her graduation from McCallum, she enrolled in the University of Texas where she earned her Bachelor's Degree and then her Master's Degree in Business Education.

During her early adult years, she taught at Reagan High School and Baker Junior High. Marie moved on to teach business at UT. Following her marriage to Ralph Moreland on July 10, 1971, she worked alongside him at Moreland Restaurants overseeing thirty-four fast food restaurants. Marie was always proud of sharing in the restaurant business with Ralph. She particularly enjoyed the Holiday House Restaurants and was especially proud of the employee Moreland scholarships she and Ralph provided.

In addition to always achieving top grades in school and being a member of the Lamplighters at UT, Marie became a very competitive and accomplished lifelong musician playing the flute and piccolo. Her passion for the flute, which began in junior high, continued through high school and on into college where she was a member of the University of Texas Longhorn Band and Orchestra. Later she became a founding member of the group New Horizons. While some might lose interest or put their instrument down with the passing of time, Marie continued to enjoy and find meaning in sharing her music with others in a diversity of settings.

While music was her life, Marie loved UT and UT football! She was interested in art and history. She and Ralph enjoyed traveling the world together collecting art, making memories and establishing many friendships through the years. Marie was also very fond of her three Bichon Frises: Bon-bon, Fifi and Tuzee.

And she certainly loved her family. While she was preceded in death by her parents and husband, she is survived by her brother: Samuel Edward Payne (who fondly gave her the name "Dee Dee" when he was a child); her two nephews: Samuel Edmond Payne and Jonathan Edward Payne; her niece: Shelbi Dawn Gross; Ralph's family whom she welcomed into her family circle: daughter Jeannie Moreland LeTeff; grandchildren: Marie Nicole LeTeff, Daniel LeTeff and Kristy Lynn Dear; and nine great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Always intelligent, talented, regal and classy, her presence was known when she walked in the room. With her death on November 29, 2017, Marie's life and presence will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday December 15, 2017 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel located at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin.
