Marie Cardona Fink was born September 1, 1929 in Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands. At 9 months old, her family moved to Birkhadem, Algeria, a small suburb of Algiers where her father worked first as a flower manager and then a fruit farm manager. At that time, Algeria was a department of France. Marie grew up speaking Catalan at home and French in school. She met Louis when he was stationed in Algiers during World War II. He heard about a farm where American soldiers were welcomed, the mother was a good cook and the daughter beautiful. He went to check it out for himself and found it all to be true. They were married for 65 years until Louis passed away in 2012. They lived in many countries as Louis' job took him to Italy, Libya, Morocco, France, Germany, Spain, and to and from the U.S. They were both very adept at learning languages. Louis learned five fluently (although he could read many more), and Marie nine including three dialects of Arabic. They were both very well read and intelligent. They had four daughters, whom they loved very much and taught them that family is the center of life. Marie was a very strong woman and was always there for her daughters and their families. She leaves behind four daughters and sons-in-law, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in Killeen.
She will be missed very much.
