Marcia Hearon Lind passed away peacefully on March 26 at Seton Hospital.
Born at the old Seton Hospital on March 20, 1936, Marcia was a fourth generation Austinite. She attended the original Wooldridge Elementary and University Junior High School in Austin and Highland Park High School in Dallas. During World War II she spent three years in Arlington, Virginia with her family and their lifelong friends and fellow Austinites the Keeton family.
A gifted musician who played the piano and the French horn, Marcia attended Southern Methodist University, where she was named Outstanding Member of the Mustang Band, Outstanding Musical School Graduate and a University Scholar.
Following a year of teaching in Blanco, where her husband Charles was County Attorney before becoming an assistant attorney general in Austin, Marcia was an Austin educator for thirty-six years. She taught at Reilly, Walnut Creek, Summitt, Read and Hill and earned an M.A. and a Ph.D in education. After serving as assistant principal at Oak Springs, Pecan Springs and Sanchez elementary schools, she completed her career as "Dr. Lind," the devoted principal of Maplewood Elementary School. In her retirement she worked with Literacy Austin, helping immigrants as a volunteer teacher of English as a Second Language.
An active member of the Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Marcia volunteered for civic organizations including the Austin Retired Teachers Association, Austin Nature Center, Capitol Area Regents Council, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa and Alpha Delta Kappa.
Her hobbies included book clubs and travel. She cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. In her words, "I made it this far, so don't grieve, but celebrate with me."
Marcia Is survived by her sons, Michael Lind and Mark Lind and his wife Sonja Franklin Lind and their daughter Sydney Austen Lind; her brothers Richard Hearon and Robert J. Hearon and wife Genevieve and her son Paul Reddam and his wife Marquette and children Ellis and Linden; her nephew Reed Hearon and her niece Anne Rambo-Rosenbaum and husband Irv Rosenbaum and her great-niece Rachel Rambo.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Friday March 31 at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends on Thursday March 30 from 6 to 8 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish, 3125 North Lamar.
