Obituary

Born in Columbus Ohio, September 11, 1933, the beloved daughter of Dr. Lewis Philip Speaker and Mary Campbell (Kahn) Speaker of Austin, TX.

Lucy grew up in Austin, where she attended the University of Texas, earned a Master of Arts degree in music, was a member of the UT Traveling Madrigals, and a life-long member of Alpha Phi sorority. She was the beloved wife and well-traveled companion for more than four decades of Smithsonian Institution Paleontologist Dr. Richard Evans Grant (1927-1994). Three sons survive her: Charles Lewis Grant (wife Leigh) of Chesterfield, VA; Evan Richard Grant (wife Tracy) of Midlothian, VA; and Lauren Philip Grant of Kitty Hawk, NC. She was also the proud grandmother of four grandsons: Lewis Richard Grant, Charles Lindstrom Grant, Connor Evans Grant, and Logan Newell Grant; and one granddaughter Morgan Jane Grant.

Lucy taught music during a career that spanned over 40 years to students of all ages in public schools in Corpus Christie, TX, Montgomery County, MD, Fairfax County, VA, and Arlington County, VA, where she spent the great majority of her career, and where she was also conductor and pianist of the Arlington "All County Chorus" for many years. Lucy was a devoted congregation and choir member of Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C. Her life-long love of music and teaching touched thousands of lives and inspired countless young musicians.

Lucy will be interred at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Austin Memorial Park where she will join her husband, mother, and father in eternal peace.
