Obituary

Our beloved mother and friend, Lorna, went to meet the Lord on April 16, 2018. She was born on January 31, 1923 in Oakland, California. As with most families, the depression was hard on her family. She graduated from Alameda High School in 1940 and attended a year at the University of California Berkeley. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, she went to work as a civilian for the U.S. Navy at the Alameda Naval Air Station.

In 1946, she came to Texas as a war bride with her new husband, John Kirkwood Overbey, and settled in Midland, Texas. She worked as a secretary for an oil company and for a few years earned more than her husband could as an independent landman. In 1973, she moved to Lamoille, Nevada, and later to Missoula, Montana, and Dallas, Texas before making Austin, Texas her current home in 1996.

Lorna was an avid golfer for most of her life. At the age of 45, she won the Midland Country Club Women's Golf Association team tournament. For many years and right up until her death, she was consumed with watching the PGA tournaments from Thursday through Sunday, while following the statistics on her iPhone app.

Lorna and her daughter, Kathy, were cruise junkies, and enjoyed trips through the Mediterranean and Baltic. As a fashion buff, she personally subsidized all the Ralph Lauren lines. She loved dogs and was rarely without her four-legged companions, owning at least eleven purebreds in seven breeds over her life.

Lorna rekindled her faith after a pilgrimage to Medjugorje in 2008.

Lorna is survived by her son, John William Kirkwood Overbey, and her sister, Antoinette Finocchio Cross. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Kathleen Overbey, and her grandchildren, Emily Elisabeth Overbey and John William Overbey.

Services will be held Friday, April 20 at 10:00 am, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Road, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to Austin Pets Alive.
