Dr. Lois M. Leffingwell, 86, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer's in Frisco, Texas.

Lois was born in Galveston, Texas on July 9, 1931 to Frank & Ruth Mendle. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Ball High School in 1947. She then attended the University of Texas in Austin, where she received her BA and MA in Bacteriology. Lois was then awarded the McLaughlin Pre-Doctoral Fellowship to attend UT Medical School in Galveston, where she was the first woman to be awarded a doctorate degree. Upon receiving her PhD in Preventive Medicine and Public Health in 1958, Lois returned to Austin and became Director of the Medical Virology Branch at the Texas Department of Health, where she remained for 32 years until her retirement in 1991. Lois was dearly loved and highly respected by all who knew her.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Thomas P. Leffingwell, Jr., and her two sisters Frances Lindsay and Lou Dyer. She is survived by her son, Thomas, daughter-in-law, Joy, and two beautiful granddaughters, Ashley and Shelby. Other survivors include niece Ellen Keller, her husband Stewart, and their two daughters, Lindsay and Allison; niece Elizabeth (Tugie) and her husband Danny Paris; niece Janet McDaniel, her son Leo McDaniel, his wife Natalie, and their son Parker; nephew Joe Dyer, Jr., his wife Pam, and their two daughters, Heather and Kelli.

Her affection, caring, and acceptance of others is testimony to her character. She genuinely loved people and believed strongly that treating others as we wish to be treated is paramount to living a complete life.

May she rest in peace.

The family wishes to thank the efforts of Sunrise of Frisco, and all the loving providers who cared for Lois during her stay.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Feb 20th, 2018 beginning at 10:00am, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home (3125 N. Lamar – Austin, TX), followed by a chapel service at 12:00 noon, and concluding with the graveside service at Austin Memorial Park (2800 Hancock Dr. – Austin, TX).
