Obituary for Lillian Anderson

November 20, 1919 - April 29, 2017
Austin, Texas | Age 97

Lillian (Schlottmann) Anderson was born November 20, 1919 at Prairie Hill, Washington County, Texas. Surrounded by her family, she entered into the eternal presence of her Lord and Savior on April 28, 2017. The granddaughter of German immigrants who came to that area before the Civil War, she was raised on the family farm at Prairie Hill by her parents, Otto and Lonnie (Roesler) Schlottmann. As a young girl, she enjoyed walking to school, playing sports with friends, and helping her family raise cotton and other staples, which engendered a lifelong love of the outdoors and gardening. After graduating from Brenham High School, Lillian attended Seton School of Nursing in Austin, Texas; she was the last surviving graduate of the class of 1941. Following graduation, she began her nursing career at the "old" Seton Hospital on 26th Street. While there, she met a handsome UT graduate, Lynn Anderson, who was a young Navy officer. Lillian and Lynn were married on August 3, 1944 and enjoyed 67 years of marriage prior to Lynn's passing in 2011. After the wedding, Lynn's Navy career led them to San Diego, California and Annapolis, Maryland before they returned to Austin to establish their home.

After helping raise her two sons, Lillian returned to nursing at the "new" Seton Hospital on 38th Street, where she worked in the nursery and helped open the first neonatal ICU in Central Texas under the direction of the late Dr. Jacob Kay. She was pleased to provide care to vulnerable infants, including children of some of Austin's most noteworthy families. After her grandchildren came along, Lillian relinquished caring for "her babies" and relished the role of being a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed continuing to spend time in her garden and helping Lynn in his small cattle operation in east Travis County.

Faithful and devout her entire life, Lillian was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill, where her great-grandfather was a founding member. Following her marriage, she became a lifelong member of University United Methodist Church in Austin, where she was a member of the Couples Class. In the community, she was an active member of the University of Texas Faculty Wives Club and the University Area Kiwanis Kianns. In later years, Lillian was a resident at Westminster Manor, where she enjoyed nourishing old friendships and establishing new ones. In addition to participating in weekly wine and cheese events, Lillian was a regular Bingo player, and she relished every win! Her grandchildren always looked forwards to their share of her winnings and the two dollar bills that she regularly placed in birthday cards and Christmas stockings. Always placing the welfare of others first, she dependably visited the bedside of friends in the Arbour Healthcare Unit when they were ill or nearing the end of their earthly life.

Lillian is survived by sons Allan, and wife Kay, Gary, and wife Kim; grandchildren Ashley Shead, Erin Terry (Steve), Scott Anderson (Lisa), and Grant Anderson (Avery Hayes); great grandchildren Sebastian Shead, Griffin Terry, and Foster Terry; sister Esther Schwenke; sister-in-law Lucille Rutherford; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Our family expresses deep appreciation for the care provided to Lillian by the nursing staff at The Arbour, Westminster Manor, and by Hospice of Austin.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 2nd from 6-8 PM, and the funeral service will be Wednesday, May 3rd at 11 AM at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home (3125 North Lamar Blvd., Austin), with reception afterwards. Interment will follow at 2:15 PM at Austin Memorial Park (2800 Hancock Dr., Austin). Memorials may be made to the Seton Nurse Scholarship Endowment in memory of Lillian S. Anderson (1201 West 38th St., Austin, Texas 78705).
