Obituary for Larry Spence Turner

January 28, 1934 - February 3, 2018
Bastrop, Texas | Age 84

Larry Spence "Coach" Turner, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, educator and coach, died in Austin on Saturday February 3, 2018 after a many months-long battle with cancer. He was born in 1934 in Cedar Creek, Bastrop County, Texas, the youngest son of Mark Dewey Turner and Bob Irene Spence Turner.

In his youth, Larry excelled as an athlete in football, basketball, track and baseball at Bastrop High School. Larry graduated from Bastrop High in 1951. Larry earned degrees from Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State), including a Master's Degree in Education. During his career as an athletic director, football coach, and educator (chemistry teacher) at Bastrop High School, Larry lived in Bastrop Texas.

Larry Turner began working as a teacher at Bastrop High in 1955 and the head coach Pap Perkins asked him to join the football staff. In 1958, at age 24, Larry became the head coach of the Bastrop Bears until 1977. He compiled a record of 132 wins, 68 losses, 9 ties, and made it as far as the 1963 quarterfinals and 1966 semifinals.

Larry Turner and his childhood hero, Rob Goode (running back for the Bastrop Bears, Texas A&M Aggies, Washington Redskins, and Philadephia Eagles), were the first inductees into the Bastrop High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

It is extremely unusual for one coach to spend his entire career at one school, much less the school that the coach attended. Other schools came calling, trying to lure him away. That his entire career was at Bastrop High School is a testament to Larry's loyalty, character, and love for Bastrop, Bastrop County, and its people.

He is survived by so many: Turner family members, his children and descendents from his first marriage, his children and descendents embraced from his second, and, I dare say, all of those who Larry taught , those who played for Larry at Bastrop High, and many others whose lives he touched.

Larry Turner was a Master Mason, Past Master of Mina Lodge in Bastrop, as well as a Golden Trowel recipient.

His passions were sports, chemistry, movies, fishing, and telling good stories and jokes. In retirement, he enjoyed his passions and spending time with family and friends, former coaches and former football players.

He always saw the good in others and was willing to go to great lengths to help those in need. He was a trusted advisor, stalwart friend and emotional rock to all who knew him. He loved every student he taught and every player he coached. He was a man among men.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:00 am on Monday, February 19, 2018 in the Bastrop High School Cafeteria, located at 1614 Chambers Street, Bastrop, Texas 787602, Benton Eskew presiding.
