Obituary for Joseph Irvin Benasutti

April 23, 1931 - December 12, 2017
Lakeway, Texas | Age 86

Joseph Irvin Benasutti passed away Tuesday, December 12th, after a long illness. The 86-year-old Lakeway, Texas resident died quietly with his wife Jane Benasutti and other family members at his side.

"Never put off what you can do today; it only makes it harder" was not just a philosophy but a practiced way of life for Joe. He will always be remembered by friends and family for his dedication, his tenacity, his work ethic, and his great sense of humor. Joe loved his grandchildren, he loved his kids, and he was devoted and deeply in love with his wife Jane.

Born on April 23, 1931, in the small mining town of Brandy Camp, Pennsylvania, Joe grew up in St.Mary's, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late John I. and Edith R. DeBenasutti of St. Mary's,Pennsylvania. After graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army, with the help of a slightly doctored Baptismal Certificate. In 1947 he served in Munich, Germany, where he qualified for Officers Candidate School. After completion of OCS at Fort Riley, Kansas, Joe was sent to Advanced Training in Maryland and then back overseas to fight in the Korean War. He served as a platoon leader and company commander in the 24th infantry and received two battlefield promotions to the rank of Captain. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

After returning from Korea, Joe joined the RCA Missile Division in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, as a line manager on the assembly floor. He advanced through the ranks while concurrently earning his Bachelor of Science Degree at Rutgers University. In his later years at RCA Joe worked with the Early Warning Radar system, travelling all over the world.

In 1974 Joe moved to Los Angeles, California to consult for Univac Corporation and four years later moved to Houston as Senior Vice President of Operations for Ross Hill Controls, a producer of high power variable speed motor drives. In 1981 Joe met Jane Richmond Robison of Houston, Texas, and they married in March of 1983. Ross Hill Controls was acquired by Ansaldo Energia, a large Italian company, in 1989. In 1993 Joe was transferred to the New York affiliate, and during that time he and Jane lived in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The next several years were some of the best years of their marriage, filled with business travel to Italy, Singapore, Seoul, South Korea and Bangkok, Thailand. They also made many new friends during those years.

Joe retired in 1999 at the age of 69 and returned to Texas, moving to Austin (or the greater Lakeway metroplex, as he called it). An active volunteer in community affairs, Joe enjoyed serving on the Property Owners Association and the Social Committee in the Village of the Hills, assisting the City of Lakeway at City Hall, serving on the City Building Commission for many years, serving as Assistant City Treasurer, and serving on the Lakeway Civic Commission for four years. Joe and Jane spent time traveling, attending social gatherings with their Lakeway and Hill's friends, and spending time with family. They were members of The Lakeway Church.

Joe is survived by his wife Jane; son Joseph I. Benasutti and wife Kathleen of Medford, New Jersey; and his son David J. Benasutti, of Pittsboro, New Jersey; and his brother John Eugene Benasutti of North Wales, Pennsylvania. Joe is also survived by his grandson Joseph Angelo Benasutti and wife Valerie and their two sons of West Richland, Washington; by stepsons David Robison and wife Michelle and John Robison and partner Jason Papp of Austin, Texas; stepdaughter Anne Matt and husband Kemper Matt, Jr. of Manlius, New York; step grandchildren Christopher Robison, Ian Robison, Reid O'Rourke, Daniel O'Rourke, Kemper Matt III, and Porter Matt; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Claire and Richard Atkins; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet and Tom Richmond; sister-in-law, Susan Bryce and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his beloved parents and by his father-in-law and mother-in-law Rollin and Beth Richmond.

The last several years would have been much more difficult for our family without the loving support of wonderful friends and caregivers. We are very grateful to all of you.

A memorial service will be held for Joe at The Lakeway Church on January 9, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Boulevard, Lakeway, Texas 78734.
