Obituary

John William Axe passed away January 22, 2018, at home, exactly where he wanted to, and with his wife by his side. He was born in Bradshaw, Texas, the youngest of six children to Carl and Mary Hampton Axe. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as all of his siblings and their spouses; sisters: Mary Axe De Frenne and Florene Axe Boyd (Lowel); brothers: Carl Jr. (Della), Eldon (Liz), and Charles (Susan) Axe. John is survived by his wife, Patricia, and daughters: Julie Axe Molinare, Melissa Axe Brandes (Allan); his son, James Alton Axe, and his step-daughter, Katrenia Ianni. He also leaves behind grandchildren: Shanna Molinare (H.J. Liller), Jason Axe (Belinda), Coppell, TX, and their Grandmother, Janette Porter Axe; Step-Grandchildren: Blake Ianni and Julianna Ianni (Fiance, John), Philadelphia, PA, and Michael Wayne Brandes; great grandsons: Braden Axe, Coppell, TX, and Hayden Joseph Liller; great granddaughter: Ryan Elizabeth Liller; nephews: Wayne Boyd, Baird, TX, William Billy Axe, Abilene, TX, Charles Axe (Jamie), Ft. Worth, TX, David Axe, Tulsa, OK; nieces: Raelene De Freene, Baker City, OR, Margaret Axe Violente, Janie Axe, Carol Axe, and Martha Axe Mooney, all of CA. He is also survived by his high school buddy William Smith, (Mary), and his Texas Tech friends Charles and Eddie Williams of Richmond, TX.

John and his siblings grew up on a ranch near Hamby, Texas, where the family raised cattle and farmed and ginned cotton. John graduated from Abilene High School at age 17, then enlisted in the Navy at age 18, following his siblings into Military Service during World War II. There, he received training as a Submariner at Hunter's Point, California. His Navy career also included being shipped to Hawaii, where he was charged with chauffeuring and assisting Admiral Locklear and Captain Watkins.

John attended Harden Simmons University, and graduated from Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas, in 1951, with a Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA). Before graduating from college, however, he earned money working a paper route and serving as a bellhop for a major hotel. Following graduation, John began his career as an insurance adjustor, and then became a claims manager, opening a local office. In short order, he established the independent claims office of Axe and Associates, which, at one time served multiple cities in Texas. Although he sold the business in 1982, he retained his aviation and marine claims business and continued working in the industry for some time. He was a Charter member of the Organized Flying Adjusters (OFA) and was an active member of numerous other professional organizations throughout his life.

There could not be enough said about John's devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends, his kind heart, and his genuine good nature; Loving, generous, honest, fair-minded, patriotic-a role model for many who knew him. As one of his long-time employees once said, "He was the best boss I ever had".

The family would like to thank the nurses of A-Med Hospice, Laurel, Melissa, Abbie, and Dee, with special thanks to Yvonne Davila, Certified Nursing Assistant, whose nine months of gentle care meant so much to him. John's family would additionally like to express their warm appreciation for the staff of Visiting Angels and Right at Home.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis followed by interment at Austin Memorial Park.
