Obituary for Joel Shane Whitaker

August 28, 1973 - September 1, 2018
Austin, Texas | Age 45

Joel Shane Whitaker, 1973-2018

Shane Whitaker, 45, of Austin, Texas, lost his long and brave battle with brain cancer on September 1, 2018. Shane was surrounded by family and friends as he walked into the arms of God.

Born in Houston, Texas, August 28, 1973, Shane spent most of his childhood in Denver, Colorado before settling in Lake Travis, Texas, at the age of 14. Shane graduated from Lake Travis High School in 1991, where he was a member of the football, baseball and track teams. Shane attended Baylor University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. In 1996, Shane graduated from Baylor University with two undergraduate degrees; Business Administration and Environmental Studies.

After graduating, Shane returned to Austin and met the love of his life, Jill. They married in 2001 and started their beautiful family in 2005 with the birth of their daughter, Reese. They welcomed their son Drew, in 2008. Shane was an amazing father who participated in all of his children's sporting events and activities, serving as soccer coach for both Reese and Drew. He loved traveling with his family and going on adventures with them. Shane loved to golf and was out on the course whenever he could find a free moment. He was a devoted fan of the Baylor Bears (..and not just after the success of RG III). Growing up in Denver, Shane was also an avid fan of the Denver Broncos.

Shane, his mother, and younger sister were founding members of Lake Travis United Methodist Church, where the Whitaker family are still members today. Shane was so proud that both of his children attended preschool at LTUMC, and Reese was confirmed in the church earlier this year. Shane relied heavily on his faith throughout his cancer journey.

Shane is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Jill; children, Reese and Drew; mother and father, Mary and Larry Whitaker; sister and brother in law, Jessie and Justin Spencer; grandmother, Mary Shook; grandfather, Earl Whitaker; loving aunts and uncles; cousins; mother and father in law; brothers and sisters in law; niece and nephew; friends; and Goddaughter, Vivi.

Shane is preceded in death and welcomed into Heaven by his grandfather, Billy Dorsey; grandmother, Peggy Whitaker; cousin, Andrew Whitaker; nephew, Holden Whitaker.

Shane's best friend from college sent him a birthday card a few days before his passing and wrote, "Some friends make your day better and some friends make your life better. Thanks for being a friend who does both!" Shane made everyone's days and lives better- and we were all blessed by knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to consider a gift to the Head for the Cure (Brain Cancer Research) ( or to Lake Travis United Methodist Church ( in Shane's loving memory.
