Obituary

Joel Lamar Parish II, born March 1, 1942, in Huntsville, Texas, went home to see his relatives on October 19, 2018.

Joel attended Spring Branch High School and the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. Joel was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he fought with the Army Troop E 17th U.S. Cavalry, 173rd Airborne Brigade from 1963-1965. While serving his Country, he made many close friends during his tour and kept in close contact with several. He loved sharing tails of his military past.

As an employee in Construction Safety, he worked for several companies in Texas and Colorado. He particularly enjoyed his coworkers, as Joel was a natural extrovert, and was driven by the freedom to move about in a job. Though he enjoyed his work, this was not his passion.

Joel had three passions in life; old cars, dogs, and, most of all, his family. He adored his 1956 blue and white Belair Chevrolet, and if you gave him a moment, he'd make you give a look at it. Later, Joel purchased a 1957 silver and white Belair and was equally proud; both cars won several awards at car shows, and he has the awards to prove it. His dogs were his constant companions, and they loved him as much as he loved them. They ate what he ate, slept where he slept, and lived the life of family. To be a part of Joel's life was extraordinary; though stubborn and ornery, he was always there, even if you didn't know it...You knew you were loved.

Going through life at the beat of his own drum, Joel was quite the individual. He lived a life by his own rules and would be best described as "colorful" by others. He was always true to himself, and you always knew where you stood.

Joel is preceded in death by his parents, Joel Lamar Parish and Mary Duncan Parish, as well as his brother, Michael Duncan Parish. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Tyson Parish of 20 years; his sister, Karen Kenty; his sons, David Lamar Parish and Joey Philliber; his daughters, Leslie Catherine Doucet and Patty Reed; his brother-in-law, Marcel Kenty; his sister-in-law, Mary Parish; and several grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be Connor Harkins, Collin Harkins, Andy Harkins, Joel Paul Kenty, Norman Phillips, David Parish, Jimmy Parish, and Joey Philliber.

A graveside funeral will be held at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Dr., in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, Joel wishes you to donate to your favorite SPCA or the Parkinson's Society.
