Joan Michele Wabschall, age 61, died peacefully on December 4, 2017 after battling the return of cancer so valiantly. Joan dedicated her life to helping children as a pediatric nurse and in promoting early literacy. She received numerous awards and recognition for her leadership and accomplishments in healthcare. Joan was very compassionate for disadvantaged and sick children. She volunteered over 10,000 hours at hospitals, clinics and schools.

Joan was born to the late John and Rose Pujazon on February 9, 1956 in Canton, OH. She graduated from Hoover High School in North Canton, OH and obtained her bachelor's and master's degree in Nursing from The Ohio State University. During her professional career, Joan was a nurse executive at various children's hospitals and pediatric clinics in Columbus, OH, San Antonio, TX, and Northern Virginia. Joan launched the Reach Out and Read program, which promotes early literacy, at a local pediatric clinic and assisted in implementing this program in more than 60 sites throughout Virginia. Recently, Joan served as Executive Director, Board member and volunteer at BookSpring, which has given over 1 million free books to children in Austin, TX.

Joan is survived by her devoted husband, Mark Wabschall, to whom she was happily married for 42 years; her son Mike and daughter-in-law Melissa and grandchildren Luke and Erika; her brother John Michael Pujazon and his wife Carole and niece Melissa Pujazon-Zazik. Joan had a large extended family of which each and every one held an important place in her heart.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers that helped Joan these past few years. The prayers and support that she received from family and friends and the outpouring of sympathy was greatly appreciated.

A celebration of Joan's life will take place on December 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Weed-Corley-Fish North Chapel at 3125 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin TX 78705. Immediately following the memorial, all are invited to a reception to be held at her house.

There will also be a memorial service on January 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at the Rossi Family Funeral Home, 730 30th Street, NW, Canton, OH 44709. Joan's ashes will be buried next to her parent's graves there.
