Obituary

Jeanneke Van Hummel, 71, of Austin, TX, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, January 4, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Jeanneke was born to Adrianus van der Weijden and Antonetta Beelen in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Jeanneke was a vivacious, kind-hearted person, who always saw the good in others whatever their station in life. She made friends easily, was a great sounding board for friends who needed one, and her friendly advice was always appreciated. Beautiful, selfless, well-spirited, optimistic, with a great attitude, and not at all about how she was perceived.

She was never afraid of going beyond her comfort zone which came in handy when she moved with her family from The Netherlands to Belgium in 1974, to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1977, to Dallas, Texas in 1980, and finally settling in Austin on Lake Travis, which thrilled her. Not speaking initially any French or Portuguese did not stop her from adapting quickly to her new surroundings, getting around, and making friends.

Very regularly she communicated with many close friends in Europe and across America. Several of them had to deal with cancer when she had to as well and thus grew a deeper bond of understanding that lasted till her final days. For most of the time, except when she was bald, one would not know what she was dealing with because she did not let it define her.

Jeanneke was a great mother putting her daughters first and did everything to raise them well, and great grandmother who adored her granddaughter. She was the foundation of the family.

Fond of dancing it did not take her long to master the samba during her years in Brazil, a country and its people she loved. She was always the light of the party.

She loved the freedom spirit, openness and friendliness of Americans which suited her well. Soon active in the Holland-America club, picking up tennis and later golf, which she enjoyed playing with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her father, A. van der Weijden, mother, A. Beelen, and brother, Hans. She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Jan A. Van Hummel, daughters Marie-Louise (spouse Larry Golaszewski), Monique (spouse Christian Battle), granddaughter Sibby Golaszewski and step-grandson Luke Battle, her brother Ad, and cherished friends who were like family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
