Obituary

Janice Lucille Williams Hokanson was born October 20, 1922, in Brownsboro, Texas, and she will be buried there at the historical Clear Fork Cemetery, June 13, 2017, to rest with forebears dating back to the early 19th century. Daughter of Marvin Leonard and Ethel Brown Williams, Janice and her family moved to Austin when she was two years old, and Austin would be her home from then on. She saw it grow from a town of 35,000 to a city of almost a million, and could only shake her head in wonder as she gazed at its modern skyline, saying sadly that the capitol building, "looks like a little fire plug." She went to John T. Allen School and Fulmore Jr. High and loved to play at Stacy Park and tap dance at the Austin Athletic Club and go swimming at the Norwood Estate pool during the Great Depression of the 1930s. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940, living with her parents in South Austin and working various clerical jobs, including stints at the Texas Legislature when it was in session. As a young woman, she and a good friend traveled by bus to New York City, where one morning at breakfast she ordered toast and coffee. The waiter asked her to repeat her order, which she did, only to have him ask her again. When she ordered for the third time, he blushed and said, "I'm sorry, but I just love to hear the way you say, 'toast and cawfee.'"

In 1958, she married Lamar Hokanson and they were together, living in South Austin, until his death in 2008. They loved to go out with friends and family and go bowling at the Tower and at the old Saengerrunde Hall. Janice lived at their home on her own until she was 94, but had a fall in March and died 2-1/2 months later. Although she and Lamar never had children, they always lived in the bosom of their families and left behind loving nieces and nephews: Terry Todd (Jan), Gayle Williams Jones (Ed), Connie Todd, Russell Williams (Linda), Pat Smith (Jennifer), Mike Smith (Michelle), and Paul Hokanson.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 10:30 am at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue with burial at Clear Fork Cemetery later that day at 1:30 pm.
