Obituary

James Bryce Kennedy, Sr. passed away peacefully on December 17, 2018, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 83 years. Jim was born on July 21, 1935, to James Houston Kennedy and Mabel McDonald Kennedy in Houston, Texas, being the youngest of five children. Jim attended Jefferson Davis High School, graduating in 1953.

A lifelong Boy Scout, Jim was awarded his Eagle Scout in 1951. Jim attended the University of Houston, before joining the United States Army in 1958 where he served as a photographer. After his discharge in 1960, Jim set out on a career as a photographer, landing a job in the Los Angeles area where he met the love of his life, wife and constant companion of 55 years, Nancy Louise Hukle.

Jim and Nancy were married on April 6, 1963, in Orange County, California. Returning to his boyhood home of Houston in 1964, Jim continued to work as a photographer. Eventually, he began a long career as an entrepreneur in the delivery business, managing a large fleet of trucks and even an airline at one point.

It was in Houston that Jim and Nancy raised their three children Terri Louise, Karen Kristine and James Bryce Jr., who were the pride of his life. The joy of his life, however, were his seven grandchildren, Morgan Osborne, Camile Cravey, Conner Osborne, Rebecca Cravey, John Osborne, Nicole Cravey and Tayler Kennedy. His face would light up the moment any one of them entered the room. And what a wonderful grandpa Jim was. Possessed of a dry and often mischievous wit, boyish charm and a delightful chuckle, Jim was a natural in that role. He never ceased to be amused at his grandchildren's antics, many of which he actively participated in, up to and including catching his backyard fence on fire while teaching his grandson's how to make flaming arrows or his grandaughters to use a shop vac to shoot empty caulking tubes into a styrofoam target.

In retirement, Jim and Nancy moved to Austin, Texas to be near family. "Camp Grandpa" was what the Cravey girls dubbed it when Nancy and Terri worked while Jim cared for Camille, Rebecca and Nicole during the summer break. Everyday was an adventure with secret codes and gourmet snacks.
Jim also loved the sea and loved to fish, spending many a day out in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico in his younger days. Some of the happiest moments in his life were spent on the ocean.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father; sister Jacquelyn Kennedy Johnson, and brothers Sanford Houston Kennedy and Donald Wayne Kennedy. Jim is survived by his wife Nancy; sister Betty and husband Stanley Menking of PA; daughter Terri and husband Hank Cravey of Austin, Texas; daughter Karen Kennedy of Houston, Texas; and son James and wife Josie Kennedy of El Paso, Texas; his seven grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held celebrating Jim's life on January 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Westlake United Methodist Church located at 1460 Redbud Trail in Austin, Texas.
