Obituary

Hubert L. Menn, Jr., 97, of Austin passed on to Heaven on Friday, May 4, 2018. Hubert was born in Yorktown, Texas on March 1, 1921, the son of Hubert L. Menn, Sr. and Martha Poch Menn. He graduated from Yorktown High School as valedictorian and attended Texas Lutheran College (now Texas Lutheran University) in Seguin, Texas finishing its two year program. He then moved to Austin and attended the University of Texas where he received the Bachelor of Business Administration and the Master of Business Administration degrees. It was here that he met Marciel Elizabeth Mueller at St. Martin's Lutheran Church where they both attended.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific in the Finance Department of the U.S. Army. When Hubert returned from the war he married Marciel, and they settled in Houston where he did public accounting for Price, Waterhouse and Company. During this time he became a Certified Public Accountant. In 1948 he and Marciel moved to Austin where he attended the University of Texas, studying for his PhD and also working as an assistant professor of accounting. During this time their daughter, Maricel, and son, Mark, were born.

In 1951, he was employed by the Board of Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools as the chief fiscal officer. In 1965, he became director of Budgets and Finance for the newly formed Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He continued in this position until he retired in 1986 with 35 years of service. After retirement he and his wife, Marciel, lived in New York City for several weeks twice a year while he graded CPA exams for the American Institute of Public Accountants.

Hubert had been a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church since he moved to Austin at the age of 20. He was president of the church's men's organization at the district level. He also served as secretary of the national Lutheran men's organization.

Hubert served twelve years on the board of Augsburg Publishing Company (now Augsburg-Fortress). He was a board member of Lutheran Social Services (now Upbring) for five years. He served his Alma Mater on the Development Board and the Board of Regents of Texas Lutheran College. Serving Jesus Christ and His Church was at the center of his life.

Hubert's wife, Marciel, predeceased him. They had celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1996 with a trip to Israel. He was then married to Berta Baschnagel.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Martha Menn, his brother, Joe K. Menn, his youngest sister, Marian Menn Knight, and brothers-in-law, Oscar Lindemann, Jack Anderson, and John Knight. He is survived by two children: a daughter, Maricel Menn Maschmeyer, and her husband Don who live in La Grange, and a son, Mark Menn, who lives in Austin. Hubert is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew Maschmeyer and M'Liss Maschmeyer of Austin; two sisters, Martha Lamour Lindemann of Dallas and Ruth Menn Anderson of Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
