Obituary

Hessie Reese Williams Owen died peacefully on Monday, April 9, 2018.

Hessie loved her faith, family, friends and community. She brought joy and laughter wherever she went and was loved by everyone who knew her. The support and encouragement she gave to her children and grandchildren was unparalleled, and her influence is reflected in their successes in school and life. Hessie's love of community led to an active volunteer role as a founding member of the Seton Development Board and memberships in The Settlement Home, DAR, and NSCDA, and included numerous fundraising efforts for the Mary Lee Foundation and St. Michael's Catholic Academy.

Hessie graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Music in 1971. She was a talented pianist and musician with the gift and ability to play any song you might request. Hessie also earned her private pilot's license, which included sneaking out to the Austin airport 30 minutes ahead of her husband to solo, much to his surprise and delight. She had a killer tennis serve, enjoyed her friendships in three "sewing clubs," and was famous for her chicken and dumplings and flaming Baked Alaska.

We will miss her presence in our lives, her love, laughter and indomitable spirit.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Edward Owen; her grandson, Lewis Thorne Brawley, and her parents, Philip Taylor and Hessie Reese Williams.

She is survived by Hessie Reese Brawley, daughter, and husband, Vance; Jack Edward Owen, Jr., son, and Catherine Hawn; grandchildren MarrGwen Dickson and husband, Patrick; Sean Rhys Owen and wife, Dr. Ambreen Rana; Vance Brawley, III and James Daly; and Hunter Brawley; sister Sally Williams Graef of Wilmington, Delaware; great-grandchildren Mary Alison, Malone and MarrGwen Dickson and Aram and Asa Owen; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at St. Austin's Catholic Church, 2026 Guadalupe, Austin, Texas 78705 (on The Drag, between W. MLK Blvd. and W. 21st Street).
