Obituary for Harold E. Mercer, "Hal"

April 22, 1928 - March 28, 2018
Lakeway, Texas | Age 89

Hal Mercer of Lakeway, Texas passed away on March 28th at the age of 89 after a long battle with heart problems.

He was born in Indiana to Hobert M. and Nannie E. Mercer, and grew up in Greeneville, Tennessee, where he attended high school and Tusculum College. He joined the Army Air Corps (later the U.S. Air Force) and graduated from flight school in 1949. Thus began his nearly 30 year Air Force career, and he retired as a "bird colonel" in 1978.

Hal's first duty station was Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, where he met and married the love of his life, Joan E. Kelley. When he passed away, they were nearing their 67th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Charis Mercer Bearden and her husband Bob; son, Harold E. Mercer, Jr; granddaughters, Kelley and Julia Scott; and brother, Hobert E. Mercer.

Loved by all he knew, Hal was an avid lifelong golfer, a patriotic and dedicated Air Force officer, faithful Christian, and devoted husband, father and grandfather. His other loves included gardening, gourmet cooking, and carpentry, reading, and staying current with the rapidly changing world. He had a delightful sense of humor, was unflaggingly loyal, and was successful at nearly all he undertook.

A memorial service for Hal will be held at The Lakeway Church on Saturday, April 14th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to his church. Obituary and guest book can be found at
