Obituary for Giles Raymond Provost

March 22, 1948 - February 23, 2018
Bee Caves, Texas | Age 69

Giles, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, died Friday, February 23rd, 2018. He was just one month shy of his 70th birthday. Giles was born in Port Arthur, Texas, March 22nd, 1948 to O'Neil Provost and Billie Carrow Provost. He was the seventh of ten children, living a happy and active childhood. At age 12, however, he was diagnosed with Encephalomyelitis and remained in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Against great odds, he achieved many of his life goals.

After moving to Austin with his family, Giles graduated from high school with honors and attended the University of Texas for a short time. In 1980 he made a courageous leap by moving to Berkeley, California, joining several of his siblings. For the first time in his life, he lived independently in his own apartment with the support of caregivers and family. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, pursuing new interests with great zeal. Giles developed a strong spiritual life with an open-minded understanding of God. In addition to his lifelong Christian journey, he was also a member of an ashram in Oakland, California. He made many wonderful friends in the San Francisco Bay Area. His years in California were among the happiest of his life.

Giles returned to Texas in the early 1990's to reside near his family in Austin and Beaumont. He was a voracious reader, much like his parents. Giles was also a brilliant thinker and writer, penning his own autobiography, "Pilgrimage of Truth". He was passionate in his convictions, enjoying spiritual, political and philosophical conversation. He embraced social justice and humanitarian causes. Giles was an Oblate of the Benedictine Order and also followed the daily meditations of Franciscan priest/author Richard Rohr.

Giles' siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins loved him deeply. His circle of friends and caregivers also cherished their relationship with him. Despite his physical challenges, he remained optimistic and determined to live a joyful life. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. Oh how we will miss his wit, contagious laughter, and that twinkle in his eye!

Giles was preceded in death by his devoted parents O'Neil and Billie Provost, brother David Provost and sister Gwen Carona. He is survived by his sisters Diane Drummond of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Paula Shaw and husband Paul of Austin; Julie Provost of Redondo Beach, California; Margo Pluta and husband Joseph of Austin; Toni Provost of Austin; and brothers O'Neil Provost and wife Nan of Oakland, California; Craig Provost and wife Dale of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his many loving nieces and nephews, as well as his great nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to thank Giles' loving friends who visited him faithfully, including the Eucharistic ministers from Emmaus Catholic Church. We would also like to thank the compassionate caregivers of Park Manor Nursing Center in Bee Cave, Texas where Giles resided for the past three years.

Honoring Giles' wishes, there will be a private family service in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Giles, our dear brother, our hero, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. (From 2 Timothy 4:7)
