Obituary

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Geraldine Anna Laier, 95, passed on September 20, 2018 in Austin, Texas.

She was born on September 30, 1922 in a small town in East Texas- New Dime Box, to Julius and Clara Polansky. She was second oldest of four children.

Known to all as Gerry, she excelled at sports, music and attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College where she earned her 2-year Degree in order to teach music during WWII. Feeling she wanted to do more for the USA, Gerry enlisted into the Navy's newly formed Navy Waves, October 1942. She was in the first Drum and Bugle Corp, the only woman on the "(men's) Navy rifle team" and was then stationed to Washington DC where she served in the Bureau of Ships managed by Lady Bird (Johnson). It was in DC that she met her soon to be husband Lt. Otto John Laier II (in a "restaurant or bar" depending on which one you asked).

Gerry served for two years in the Navy. Then was honorably discharged November 1944, and became mother to three children, OJ Laier III, Jennifer Mari Laier (Martinec) and Thomas (Tony) A. Laier.

Later, Gerry work for the IRS for 16 years, retiring to further devote her time to family, golf, gardening, embroidery, walking (and winning) the Dime Box TX Mini Marathon (yearly), making jelly and faithfully giving of her time and talents to St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

Gerry is preceded in death by her husband, Otto; brother, Clinton; sisters, Loree Rost and Lynn (Puddin') Garrett. She is survived by her three children, their spouses; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: OJ Laier III (his children, Chris Laier, Nathania Woosley and her husband Jerad, their three children, Elijah, Lathan, Clayton and Jordan Laier with his wife Brianna), Jennifer Mari Martinec (her husband Joe, their children, Erik wife Lonnie, her son Travis and Annaliese Martin with her husband Kinnon), and Thomas (Tony) A. Laier with wife Kay.

Gerry's love and generosity will be honored with a Rosary at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress.

Funeral Mass 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf Street.
