Obituary

Gaylan DuBose died Friday morning, September 14, in the Dell-Seton Hospital emergency room from heart failure brought on by complications from dialysis. He was born in 1941, grew up in Devine, Texas, and would have celebrated his 77th birthday on October 4th.

He is survived by his sister, Lexie Petty, and brother, Joe DuBose, who both live in San Antonio and another sister, Roxy Cowan, who lives in Brenham. Also included are a number of loving nieces and nephews.

Gaylan was a master teacher of English and classical Latin. After graduating from North Texas State University, he taught at Grapevine High School at age 22. He earned a master's degree with honors in graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. He also taught in San Antonio at Edgewood Elementary School and John Jay High School.

Gaylan moved to Austin in 1973 and taught for many years at Travis High School and later at Westwood High School. He also taught at Fulmore Middle School and concluded his career at St. Andrew's Episcopal Middle School. Following that, he taught multi-levels of Latin online for several years. His teaching career spanned an amazing fifty-four years.

He authored and co-authored several Latin student guides that are in use nationally. He found time to be an organist and chair director at St. Augustine's Orthodox Church in Pflugerville for twenty years. Gaylan was also a 32° Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite for fifty years.

He was always a friend to everyone, he listened, and treated every less-fortunate person as family. He had a fulfilled life knowing that the secret of happiness lies in finding pleasure in small things. He experienced a very special trip through life with his companion of forty-six years, Frank Franklin, and was considered a cherished uncle and grandfather. This trip has now ended, as all trips must, and we shall move on to other things.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, at St. Augustine's Orthodox Church, 100 Wilbarger St. East in Pflugerville. Burial will be that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Devine Evergreen Cemetery, Devine, Texas.
