Obituary

In his own words:

I was born in my maternal grandmother's back bedroom at 405 W. 21st, Austin, Texas on December 3, 1921. As my native Austinite parents did, Frank M. Covert, Jr, and Elizabeth Cartledge Covert, I went to Pease School, Allen Junior High, and Austin High School, graduating in 1939, where I received a National Honor Society Medal and lettered in track, placing 3rd in low hurdles and 4th in the high hurdles at the Texas State High School Meet. I studied pre-med at The University of Texas, lettering in track and field and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. I graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine on V-J Day, August, 1945, having been in the Naval V-12 program during WW II. As a young Naval LTJG and doctor, I interned at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX, serving two years in the Navy at the VA Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, then four years surgical residency at Scott & White. I was fortunate enough to meet my life love and soul mate, Martha Woods, while interning in Temple, and we married February 1, 1947 for 67 1/2 wonderful years.

After the surgical residency in Temple, Martha and I moved to Austin in 1952, and I practiced general surgery. Martha joined me in the University Presbyterian Church, where I was baptized as an infant and became a lifelong member. I was honored to be the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Austin, and to be the Chief Naval Officer of the Admirals Club of Austin.

Martha and I had two daughters, Gary Beth and Carol, having many wonderful vacations together in Hawaii, Europe, the Bahamas, and Mexico. I became a private pilot in 1960, owning different single & twin engine planes over the next 40 years-taking family & friends on business vacations, and hunting & fishing trips. In the late 1950's & early 1960's, I became more active in investments & finance, becoming a director or officer in family owned banks in Temple, Teague, Mexia and Ballinger. I also served as a Director of the Capital National Bank of Austin that eventually became the JP Morgan Chase Bank. Martha and I bought a cattle and hunting ranch in South Texas in 1966, naming it the Escondido Ranch and enjoying the property as a family retreat. I retired out of medicine in January, 1968. I particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska and Argentina, and hunting in Africa with my grandson, Chris.

My parents predeceased me. My world came crashing down in July, 2014 when Martha fell, broke her hip, and died 30 days later from complications. A beautiful, wonderful, lovely lady was gone. I will never ever get over it. I am most blessed to be survived with the love and support of my daughters Gary Beth Baggett and her husband Richard, Carol Crowley and her husband Tim, and my grandchildren Catherine Covert Baggett of Los Angeles, California; Christopher Covert Crowley and his wife Katie of Austin, Texas; and Elizabeth Hollins Crowley of Washington, D.C.

The family would like to add our thanks to his wonderful team of caregivers, Vera, Paul, Janie, Sandra, Cade and Betty, who for the last month helped him continue living as he desired, independently in his home.

We will be forever grateful for having this incredible father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend in our world for so long. Although his light shines elsewhere now, we will feel his warmth and love forever.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at University Presbyterian Church, 2203 San Antonio St, Austin.
In lieu of flowers, please donate if desired to his lifelong church, The University Presbyterian Church, 2203 San Antonio Street, Austin, Texas 78705, or to the Dr. and Mrs. Frank M. Covert, III, Endowed Scholarship Fund at Schreiner University, 2100 Memorial Boulevard, Kerrville, Texas 78028-5697, or the charity of your choice.
