Obituary

Duey Walther, of Leander, passed away peacefully on Sunday October 22nd, 2017. Born April 14, 1931 to Eugene Clifford Walther and Ruth Alberta (Powell) Walther in South Connellsville, Pennsylvania, he blessed this earth for 86 years.

After high school he worked at a local furniture store until he enlisted in the Navy at age 21. He served his country aboard The USS Goodrich from Aug 1952 until Aug 1956, then served in the Navy Reserves until he received an Honorable Discharge on August 19, 1960. He was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal, as well as the National Defense Service Medal.

He continued to serve his country through his career with the Veteran's Administration here in Austin, when he later retired in 1986.

Duey was a very talented musician and fiddle player. He could play any stringed instrument, but in his later years the piano became his passion. He played with some of Texas' greatest, but he also played with anyone who could pick up a guitar and follow along as he played the fiddle or piano. He grew up playing music with his family. He spent countless hours playing music with his mom and dad, and his siblings...it was a family affair, and they all played by ear! Whether it was listing to other musicians, going out dancing, playing the piano or fiddle with friends or being up on stage, music was his Joy in life!

Duey was a gentle soul. A kind and patient, happy-go-lucky, light-hearted person whose smile touched the heart of each and every person he ever met. He never knew a stranger, and would help anyone in need. Even though he had none of his own, he loved children...and they loved him! Not only did he entertain with music, but he told stories, and jokes, and had his own little sayings that always left you with a smile. He had a magnetic personality, that just drew people to him.

He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Eugene & Ruth, and siblings: Gary Walther, Danny Walther, Jack Walther, Ronnie Walther, and only sister Gloria Jean (Walther) Upton.

His surviving loved ones are his brother Merle Walther, and his niece Tammy Lynn (Walther) Smith, his 2 great nieces: Brittney Smith & Chloe Smith, and his close... special friend, companion and caretaker Mary Chester.

Duey will be laid to rest, next to his parents and brother Danny Walther, on Monday October 30th, at 2:00 in Bagdad Cemetery in Leander.

A Celebration of Life, will be held Sunday November 12th from 3-6 pm @ the Leander VFW. Come join us as we all gather to celebrate Duey's life, share his music & memories and tell the story of how he touched your life.
