Obituary

Our Beloved mother, Esther Cardenas de Diaz de Leon, was called by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 27, 2017. She was born September 20, 1916 in Aguascalientes, Mexico and was a resident of Austin, Texas since 1953. Esther was the second of three children of Felipe Cardenas and Calixta Soto de Cardenas. She earned a teaching degree and worked as a Primary School educator before dedicating her life to caring for and raising her family. A passionate advocate for learning, she ensured that her eight children received a good education. Esther loved working in her yard, cleaning every last fallen leaf or twig before tending to her flower garden with the same enthusiastic attention to detail. Esther also enjoyed singing, participating in the choir when she was young and later singing at home. A born storyteller, Esther loved sharing stories from her youth, recounting the fighting between the Federales, the Villistas and Carrancistas during the Mexican Revolution, and how she could see and hear the bullets go by as well as the many soldiers. Her family benefitted greatly not only from her century of amazing experiences, but from her love, poise, grace and wisdom. We will greatly miss her sarcastic wit and humor. One could always count on a smile from Esther, "Ita" as she was fondly known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, Felipe Cardenas and Calixta Soto Cardenas, her two brothers, Manuel Cardenas and Baudelio Cardenas and by her husband, Eustaquio Diaz de Leon.

She is survived by her eight children, Ruth E. Pagay (Shriniwas Pagay), Miriam E. Eastlack, Esther E. Gutierrez (Jose I. Gutierrez), Irma Lopez de Lara (Daniel Lopez de Lara), Samuel Diaz de Leon, (Laura Gutierrez), Moises Diaz de Leon, Sonia Hartshorne, (Joe Hartshorne), Josh Diaz de Leon, (Jane Wahrmund Diaz de Leon). She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Several of her children and grandchildren are graduates of University of Texas and other universities, both foreign and domestic.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31st at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78705. Bendición Indígena
Que el camino se te haga corto,
Que el viento siempre esté a tus espaldas,
Que el sol te acaricie gentilmente,
Y hasta que nos volvamos a ver,
Que el espíritu del universo te resguarde en la palma de su mano.
