Obituary

Eleanor Elizabeth Harris of Austin, Texas passed peacefully on November 14, 2017 after a brief illness. Born in Austin on June 12, 1931 to August Watkins Harris and Loula Macgill Ujffy Harris, she was the youngest of four children.

She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She also studied at the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York. Following graduation, she became a clothing designer in New York's Garment District. Returning to Austin, in addition to her ongoing design career, she worked at the Austin Public Library, the Austin History Center and for many years was librarian at the Howson Branch Library in Tarrytown and St. Andrew's Episcopal School. She was involved with the Austin Art Guild, Umlauf Sculpture Gardens and the Rose Society among many. Because of her passion as a gourmet, she also served on an advisory committee for Central Market. Eleanor has been a faithful and active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd since 1946.

A woman with the gifts of great intelligence, boundless creativity and the irrepressible willingness to share, she was never at a loss for words. She will be remembered by many for her talks on Austin's history, her passion for antiques and gardening, her piano playing, singing and her art. Eleanor also had an abiding passion for cooking and loved to entertain.

Her creative streak ran deep. When she was a little girl, she asked for a camera and with her "Brownie" in hand, a new world opened for her. Landscapes and clouds were frequent subjects but flowers were always her passion. She grew them, photographed, and painted them surrounding herself with their beauty.

She is predeceased by her parents, sister Precious and brother Watt, and survived by her beloved brother, William Harris of Severna Park, Maryland, nephew Bill Gregg and wife Marie of St. Louis, Loula Gregg of Kent, Washington, nephew Maury Harris of Houston, niece Lynn Kitzmiller and husband Pete of Millersburg, Maryland, nephew Happy Harris and Rosemary of Austin, and niece Banford Weissmann and husband Arnie of New York and their families.

A memorial service at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will be planned in the coming weeks. Eleanor will be buried at Cahill Cemetery in Galveston next to her mother. In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, memorials may be sent to the Austin History Center Association, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, or the Umlauf Sculpture Garden.
